• This is the process whereby food is broken
down into simpler substances.
• We eat food to obtain energy to do work.
3. Parts of the Digestive System
• Mouth
• Gullet
• Stomach
• Small intestine
• Large intestine
• Rectum and Anus
4. Mouth
• The teeth chews the food and break it down
into smaller pieces.
• The saliva then mix with the food so that the
food can be soft and easy to swallow.
• Carbohydrates are digested into simpler
sugars.
5. Gullet
• The gullet links the mouth to the stomach.
• It has muscles so as to push the food into the
stomach.
6. Stomach
• Gastric juice is mixed with the food to break
down some food into simpler substances.
• Proteins are digested.
7. Small Intestine
• It is a very long tube that is about 6m long.
• More digestive juices are produced to break
down all the food into simpler substances.
• Digestion is completed here.
• Digested food is absorbed into the
bloodstream and is being absorbed.
• Starch, sugar and fats are being digested.
8. Large Intestine
• The large intestine absorbs water and mineral
salts and the water and mineral salts will be
absorbed by the blood.
• The undigested food will move to the rectum.
9. Rectum and Anus
• The rectum stores the undigested waste and
the faces will be passed out through the anus.
