ACCESS TO MEDICATION IN REMOTE WEST AFRICA
The global HR representative of an XN Corporate exploration and mining
client contacted XN regarding an expatriate employee who was
experiencing respiratory issues and severe abdominal pain while on
assignment in Guinea. The doctor at the mine site in Guinea diagnosed the
employee with Strongyloidiasis, a human parasitic disease, and prescribed
a drug called Ivermectin. However, there was no access to the drug at the
mine site or anywhere in the immediate area. The HR representative
requested XN's assistance with securing the medication either somewhere
in Guinea or in Bamako, Mali and they were prepared to send a driver to
wherever the drug could be picked up and get it to the mine site where the
employee was being treated.
THE SOLUTION
THE SITUATION
The first step was to reach out to an XN in-network medical provider in
Bamako. XN was able to provide the medical provider with a copies of the
doctor's prescription and the member's ID card and issue a Guarantee of
Payment (GOP). However, after investigating further with the medical
provider, it was determined that the medication was not available and
XN would need to find another source for the medication. Notifying the
client of the change in plans, XN began to search with other providers
both in and out of the provider network to find Ivermectin. The XN
international medical network was able to locate a pharmacy in Bamako
that had the medication, however, the provider was out-of-network. XN
was able to work with the pharmacy to provide a GOP. The pharmacy was
happy to accept the GOP after looking into the background of XN and
Henner (XN’s parent company). XN notified the employer of the new
situation, and provided the driver with the documents necessary to pick
up the prescription (copies of the employee's digital ID card, medical
prescription and the GOP issued by the XN claims team). The driver was able
to pick up the medication without issue and XN arranged direct settlement
with the pharmacy. From the time XN received the initial request for
assistance from the client to the time the medication was ready to be picked
up, took just 3 hours. The next day the employee at the mine site began
treatment with the drug and shortly after showed considerable improvement
on his way to a full recovery.
