Потому что нам важен ваш результат®!   Reading Comprehension. Task Passage 1 I refer to the thousands of pottery vessels and ancient lamps that are essentially duplicates of one another. In one small excavation in Cyprus, archaeologists recently uncovered 2,000 virtually indistinguishable small jugs in a single courtyard. Even precious royal seal impressions known as l’melekh handles have been found in abundance —more than 4,000 examples so far. The basements of museums are simply not large enough to store the artifacts that are likely to be discovered in the future. There is not enough money even to catalog the finds; as a result, they cannot be found again and become as inaccessible as if they had never been discovered. Indeed, with the help of a computer, sold artifacts could be more accessible than are the pieces stored in bulging museum basements. Prior to sale, each could be photographed and the list of the purchasers could be maintained on the computer. A purchaser could even be required to agree to return the piece if it should become needed for scientific purposes. 1.Which of the following is mentioned in the passage as a disadvantage of storing artifacts in museum basements? (A) Museum officials rarely allow scholars access to such artifacts. (B) Space that could be better used for display is taken up for storage. (C) Artifacts discovered in one excavation often become separated from each other. (D) Such artifacts are often damaged by variations in temperature and humidity. (E) Such artifacts often remain uncataloged and thus cannot be located once they are put in storage. www.mbastrategy.ru www.mbastrategy.ua
Потому что нам важен ваш результат®!   Critical Reasoning. Task In recent years, many cabinetmakers have been winning acclaim as artists. But since furniture must be useful, cabinetmakers must exercise their craft with an eye to the practical utility of their product. For this reason, cabinetmaking is not art.    Which of the following is an assumption that supports drawing the conclusion above from the reason given for that conclusion?   (A) Some furniture is made to be placed in museums, where it will not be used by anyone. (B) Some cabinetmakers are more concerned than others with the practical utility of the products they produce. (C) Cabinetmakers should be more concerned with the practical utility of their products than they currently are. (D) An object is not an art object if its maker pays attention to the object’s practical utility. (E) Artists are not concerned with the monetary value of their products. www.mbastrategy.ru www.mbastrategy.ua
Потому что нам важен ваш результат®!   Sentence Corrections. Task Joachim Raff and Giacomo Meyerbeer are examples of the kind of composer who receives popular acclaim while living, often goes into decline after death, and never regains popularity again.   (A) often goes into decline after death, and never regains popularity again (B) whose reputation declines after death and never regains its status again (C) but whose reputation declines after death and never regains its former status (D) who declines in reputation after death and who never regained popularity again (E) then has declined in reputation after death and never regained popularity www.mbastrategy.ru www.mbastrategy.ua

Потому что нам важен ваш результат®!   Problem Solving. Task 2.What is √(x2 - 6 × x + 9) + √(2 - x) + (x - 3) if each term in this expression is well defined? A) √(2 - x) B) 2 × x - 6 + √(2 - x) C) √(2 - x) + (x - 3) D) 2 × x - 6 + √(x - 2) E) x + √(x - 2) www.mbastrategy.ru www.mbastrategy.ua
Потому что нам важен ваш результат®!   Problem Solving. Explanation The correct answer is A. Step 1: x2 - 6 × x + 9=(x-3)2 Step 2: √(x2 - 6 × x + 9) = √(x-3)2=|x-3| NOTE: √(a2)=|a| Step 3: “… each term in this expression is well defined” means, that √(2 - x) is well defined: 2 – x ≥ 0 or x ≤ 2, hence x – 3 ≤ -1, which means, that |x-3| = - (x - 3) = 3 - x Step 4: √(x2 - 6 × x + 9) + √(2 - x) + (x - 3) = 3 - x + √(2 - x) + x - 3=√(2 - x) . www.mbastrategy.ru www.mbastrategy.ua

(1)The measure of angle QPR is 30̊. (2)The sum of the measures of angles PQR and PRQ is 150̊. Q R P S (A) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but Statement (2) alone is not sufficient (B) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but Statement (1) alone is not sufficient (C) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient (D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient (E) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient www.mbastrategy.ru www.mbastrategy.ua
Or Потому что нам важен ваш результат®!   . Data Sufficiency. Explanation The correct answer is D. Step 1: Interpret the question. The key to this problem is the fact that the exterior angle of a triangle equals to the sum of two angles of the triangle not neighbouring with it. Step 2: Analyze the first statement alone. The measure of angle QPR is 30̊ - that is the answer to our question. The first statement is sufficient. Step 3: Analyze the second statement alone. The sum of the measures of angles PQR and PRQ is 150̊, hence angle QPR=180̊-150̊=30̊. The second statement is sufficient. For the triangle PRQ in our problem angle PRS is an exterior angle, hence Or In fact, we are asked about the angle QPR. www.mbastrategy.ru www.mbastrategy.ua
Потому что нам важен ваш результат®!   Data Sufficiency. Task 6. Henry purchased 3 items during a sale. He received a 20 percent discount off the regular price of the most expensive item and 10 percent discount off the regular price of each of the other 2 items. Was the total amount of the 3 discounts greater than 15 percent of the sum of the regular prices of the 3 items? (1) The regular price of the most expensive item was $50, and the regular price of the next most expensive item was $20 (2) The regular price of the least expensive item was $15 (A) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but Statement (2) alone is not sufficient (B) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but Statement (1) alone is not sufficient (C) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient (D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient (E) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient www.mbastrategy.ru www.mbastrategy.ua
Потому что нам важен ваш результат®!   . Data Sufficiency. Explanation Step 1: interpret the question of the problem. Let’s x, y and z be the prices of the items from the most expensive to the least expensive. The discount Henry received from the three items together equals 0.2x + 0.1y + 0.1z 15 percent of the sum of the regular prices of the 3 items equals 0.15(x + y + z) Our question is whether 0.2x+0.1y+0.1z > 0.15(x + y + z) 0.2x+0.1y+0.1z > 0.15x + 0.15y + 0.15z 0.05x – 0.05y – 0.05z > 0 x – y – z > 0 www.mbastrategy.ru www.mbastrategy.ua
Потому что нам важен ваш результат®!   . Data Sufficiency. Explanation The correct answer is A. Step 2: From the first statement we know, that x=50, y=20. Substitute the values: 50 – 20 – z > 0 30 – z > 0 z < 30 This is definitely true, since z is the least expensive item. The first statement is sufficient. Step 3: From the second statement we know, that z=15. But this information is not sufficient to answer the question. www.mbastrategy.ru www.mbastrategy.ua

Потому что нам важен ваш результат®!   Passage 2 All the cells in a particular plant start out with the same complement of genes. How then can these cells differentiate and form structures as different as roots, stems, leaves, and fruits? The answer is that only a small subset of the genes in a particular kind of cell are expressed, or turned on, at a given time. This is accomplished by a complex system of chemical messengers that in plants include hormones and other regulatory molecules. Five major hormones have been identified: auxin, abscisic acid, cytokinin, ethylene, and gibberellin. Studies of plants have now identified a new class of regulatory molecules called oligosaccharins. The pleiotropy of the five well-studied plant hormones is somewhat analogous to that of certain hormones in animals. For example, hormones from the hypothalamus in the brain stimulate the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland to synthesize and release many different hormones, one of which stimulates the release of hormones from the adrenal cortex. These hormones have specific effects on target organs all over the body. One hormone stimulates the thyroid gland, for example, another the ovarian follicle cells, and so forth. In other words, there is a hierarchy of hormones.   Such a hierarchy may also exist in plants. Oligosaccharins are fragments of the cell wall released by enzymes: different enzymes release different oligosaccharins. There are indications that pleiotropic plant hormones may actually function by activating the enzymes that release these other, more specific chemical messengers from the cell wall. 2. The passage suggests that which of the following is a function likely to be performed by an oligosaccharin?   (A) To stimulate a particular plant cell to become part of a plant’s root system (B) To stimulate the walls of a particular cell to produce other oligosaccharins (C) To activate enzymes that release specific chemical messengers from plant cell walls (D) To duplicate the gene complement in a particular plant cell (E) To produce multiple effects on a particular subsystem of plant cells. www.mbastrategy.ru www.mbastrategy.ua
Потому что нам важен ваш результат®!   Critical Reasoning. Task 4. Many people suffer an allergic reaction to certain sulfites, including those that are commonly added to wine as preservatives. However, since there are several winemakers who add sulfites to none of the wines they produce, people who would like to drink wine but are allergic to sulfites can drink wines produced by these winemakers without risking an allergic reaction to sulfites.   Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?   (A) These winemakers have been able to duplicate the preservative effect produced by adding sulfites by means that do not involve adding any potentially allergenic substances to their wine. (B) Not all forms of sulfite are equally likely to produce the allergic reaction. (C) Wine is the only beverage to which sulfites are commonly added. (D) Apart from sulfites, there are no substances commonly present in wine that give rise to an allergic reaction. (E) Sulfites are not naturally present in the wines produced by these winemakers in amounts large enough to produce an allergic reaction in someone who drinks these wines. www.mbastrategy.ru www.mbastrategy.ua
