THE CHALLENGE
THE PROCESS
As a software agency we wanted to
conduct our own usability tests. My task
was to build up a usability lab for our
company with only a small budget.
I started with research and looked at
different software tools. For field tests I
chose „Lookback“ and „Magitest“ and
made a pre-testing evaluation session
with them.
For lab testing I chose „Silverback“ as the
right tool for our needs. It records
computer screen output as well as the
participant’s face and audio commentary.
I also wanted to be able to record
lab tests with mobile devices. For this
purpose I simply bought a good web cam.
Done! Now we had a usability lab, but no
participants....
CREATING A USABILITY LAB
10. THE PROCESS
BUILDING A TESTING PARTICIPANT DATABASE
First, I created flyers and posted them
at places of promise. Some places
worked very well, but some not. I still
needed more participants from specific
target groups. We decided to try targetted
Facebook ads. I created three different
ads for different profiles. This was a
success - after a short time I had
established a broad participant database.
In addition, I then had a system for very
quickly finding more participants from a
specific target group.
THE CHALLENGE
I had sucessfully set up the usability lab…
but with no testers, my next task was to
build a participant database.
11. THE CHALLENGE
THE PROCESS
To redesign the front end for the MeMo
News online media monitoring tool.
Identify and document usability issues
and user expectations by interviewing
existing customers.
I started the project with an Expert
Review of the current software, a
competitor analysis and customer
interviews. After I had a clear view of the
customers I created User Roles and
Personas. I worked closely together with
the development team by creating the
new information architecture, the
interaction design, wireframes and
detailed mockups.

12. THE CHALLENGE
THE PROCESS
Design a corporate identity for a Big Data
startup.
I planned and led a corporate identity
workshop with the founders and
employees of the company. Based on the
results, the marketing team and me
created the corporate design including
moodboard, logo, font, colours and
business cards.
We also designed the website which
included customised photography.
CORPORATE IDENTITY / SENTRIC
13. THE CHALLENGE
THE PROCESS
Design a new iOS word puzzle game
that has the same success patterns as the
leading competitors, but with a unique
difference.
At the beginning of the project we
analyzed the current market and
identified the sucess factors. We defined
target groups, developed personas, and
brainstormed design concepts. We
created the „Double Trouble“ concept
that uniquely combines sucessful
elements from word-play and picture
games.
I created the logo, branding and app
design based on that concept. As part of
an interative development cycle, we
planned and conducted usability tests in
the field with prototypes at various
stages.

14. THE CHALLENGE
THE PROCESS
The „City Guide“ app is an iPhone
application that offers the user digital
GPS guided tours through the city of
Konstanz.
At the beginning of the project I
supported the team with user research
information and developed a first
concept of the app.
After the app was fully developed we
performed a series of usability tests
in a realistic field environment. I planned
and conducted these tests with
specifically selected participants from our
database.
FIELD USABILITY TEST / KONSTANZ CITY GUIDE
Usability testing in the field for a location
based mobile app.
15. THE CHALLENGE
THE PROCESS
Responsive re-design of complex e-
commerce site with huge content. Work
together with SEO team and Product
Management to define what conent is
really relevant and what can be left out.
I supported the product managers by
creating requirements, definition of goals,
writing user stories and product
documentation. My duties also included
analysis of competitors, click data
analysis and user research.
Working in an interdisciplinary team we
transformed the original desktop website
into a mobile and user friendly
responsive site. My main focus was on
developing interface and interaction
concepts as simple wireframes, as well as
functional prototypes with AXURE
software. The concepts were regularly
tested with in-house usability tests .
RESPONSIVE REDESIGN OF E-COMMERCE SITE / HOLIDAYCHECK
16. THE PROCESS
FACEBOOK APP / MIGROSTHE CHALLENGE
Conduct in-house usability testing of a
promotional Facebook game on both
mobile and desktop platforms, across a
variety of devices.
In this project I supported the team with a
UX review of their concepts.
After they had developed the app I
planned and conducted in-house
usability tests with specific participants
from our database. Because this app was
designed to work responsively on
different device sizes we needed to test
on various platforms. Every participant
had to test the app on desktop and on
his preferred platform (iOS or Android).
We changed the order of the presented
devices in every second session.
17. THE CHALLENGE
THE PROCESS
Provide stakeholders a functional
prototype for an investment pitch.
After a limited briefing we started
competitor research, defined the target
group and created personas. To deepen
understanding and create a vision and
business model we conducted a
requirements workshop with the
stakeholders. We sucessfully made
scenarios, user journeys, user stories, a
complete feature list and a highly
motivated customer. I continued with
paper sketches of the product. Working
closely with the product manager I then
built a functional HTML prototype using
Axure. Following stakeholder approval,
we then created a visual identity which I
added to the prototype. With this
prototype I then planned and conducted
in-house usability tests. Now we’re
waiting for the results of the investment
pitch. TBC…
