6. Simple Changes You Can Make
Switching to CFLs
CFLs use 65-75% less energy than
incandescent light bulbs.
Although CFLs cost up to 50% more
than regular bulbs, they last ten times
longer, saving you $77 off your energy
bill during the life of the bulb.
Cost of incandescent light bulbs per
year= $9
Initial cost= $1 per light bulb (bought
in bulk)
Annual savings in an office= $400
Assumptions: 50 people, 50 light bulbs. A normal 60 watt bulb over the 8000 hours will cost you $48.00 in electricity. But the lower
wattage on the fluorescent bulb for that same 8000 hours will only cost you $12. That’s $36 for the life of the bulb. Assume 4
years per bulb.

Turning Computers Off at Night
Numerous studies have shown

environmentally, from IT equipment left
on overnight.
Cost of electricity powering a computer
during non-working hours each month=
$3.38
A conservative estimate
Initial cost= Free
Annual savings in an office= $825
Assumptions: 50 people, savings extrapolated from

8. Simple Changes You Can Make
Automating Your Thermostat
Even 1 F of overheating raises heating
costs by 3-5%.
Most people are comfortable at 66.2 F.
Try setting the air conditioning threshold
at 75 F.
Savings of heating/cooling per person=
$0.25 monthly
Initial cost= $30
Annual savings in an office= $120
Assumptions: 50 people, based on average utility data from SSC clients.

9. Simple Changes You Can Make
Installing Occupancy Sensors
A typical office spends 29% of its electrical energy costs for
lighting.
Occupancy sensors reduce these charges by %50, perhaps
even more, at an energy savings of 5¢- 20¢ per square foot.
Initial cost= $30 per sensor
Annual savings in an average office= $1130
Assumptions: 50 people, 250 square feet per person, $0.10 savings per square foot, assume 4 sensors.

Initial cost= $260 per toilet
Annual savings in an office= $76
Assumptions: 50 people, 2 flushes each/day, 20 days/month, switch from 3.5 gallon/flush to 1.5 gallon/flush
