Objective Understand & become familiar with Food borne diseases Learn, take food and water precautions. Things to carry while travelling
Food Poisoning ‘any illness resulting from consumption of contaminated food’ Food Intoxication Food Infection  Presence of bacteria or other  microbes which infect the body  after consumption  Ingestion of toxins contained within the food, including bacterially produced exotoxins, which can happen even when the microbe that produced the toxin is no longer present or able to cause infection  Who contaminates food..?  Mostly:  pathogenic bacteria, viruses, prions or parasites  Rarely:  chemical or natural toxins (poisonous mushrooms or reef fish ),               pesticides or medicines in food

Food Precautions Avoid: Food from street vendors, dingy restaurants and the ones that are empty. X Improperly cooked food (usually contaminated with dust) X Warm Food X (Danger Zone) Food left sitting (may attract flies and cause major health hazards) X Junk foods like burgers, chowmein, chips, samosas, cold drinks X Salads, raw vegetables and  unpasteurized dairy products X Ice X Foods like omelets sandwiches sold by vendors on buses/trains X Sauces, soufflés, prawns, cocktails and mousses X                        ..cont
..contd Fresh fruit juices from the roadside juice stalls. Go for branded packed juices      or unpeeled fruits (wash them before you eat) X 11. Un-cooked meat like salami and ham cold cuts X 12. Water Precautions Drink only bottled mineral water. If mineral water is not available, ask for boiled water Do not drink beverages with ice. Never ever drink water from roadside vendors,      water sold in polythene bags, tap water, at restaurants      and other public places. 5. Beware of cheap fake bottled water.    Make sure to check that the seal of the bottle is intact.  6. Also, see if there is anything floating in it before buying.

Hand washing Most important thing you can do to keep from getting sick ! Correct way to wash hands Wet your hands with warm water, Apply soap. Rub hands together and scrub really well. Be sure to get under fingernails and in between fingers. Scrub for about 10-15 seconds Rinse hands of soap & Dry hands well with a clean paper towel or cloth. Turn off faucet with paper towel.

General Reminders….  Food safety is currently one of  WHO's top ten priorities !! ,[object Object],or sneeze, put used tissue in the trash.  ,[object Object], upper sleeve, not your hands  ,[object Object],  especially after coughing or sneezing  ,[object Object]
 In case of nasty sunburn, visit the nearest clinic and  get yourself treated.  ,[object Object],and parasitic infection. If you do, make sure you wash your feet  thoroughly with clean water and soap and dry them quickly.
