1. Swiss Centre of the University of Strathclyde in Zurich
Background Information on the Strathclyde Executive MBA
The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow is one of the largest Universities in the United Kingdom.
For over 200 years our University has had a mission to be ‘a place of useful learning’. With our up-
to-date education and our international reputation in research and teaching we continuously prove
our mission.
Executive MBA in Zurich
Since 1996 the Swiss Centre of the University of Strathclyde Business School is in operation.
Most MBA programmes include sections on strategy, but at Strathclyde we put a particular
emphasis on strategic management in the second year of study. We focus at the level of
developing strategy in any organisation - big or small, departmental or divisional. This
interventionalist approach to strategic change is distinctive to Strathclyde, and a crucial
differentiator.
Qualified and International
The Swiss Centre is located at Zurich Airport and managed by the Swiss Management Forum.
Next to the part-time Executive MBA a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) is offered.
Only lecturers of the University of Strathclyde, who fly in for the seminars, teach on the
programme. Therefore 100% of the teaching is done in English. These professors are renown by
their business experience as well as academic background.
Approximately half of the students who study in Zurich are Swiss. The other half is made up of
foreigners living and working in Switzerland or neighbouring countries. Graduates of the
Strathclyde MBA possess a degree from an internationally recognized government university.
Foundation and History
The University of Strathclyde received its royal charter in 1964, but its history goes back to 1796
when it was founded as Anderson's Institution during the age of enlightenment. Its founder, John
Anderson, left instructions in his will that a new higher education institution be established as 'a
place of useful learning', which should also be open to women. This ethos remains true today,
underpinning the industrially and commercially relevant research and teaching being undertaken
throughout the university.
Since 1964 Strathclyde has grown to become Scotland's third largest university. It is now among
the leading universities as a centre of teaching excellence and is one of the top research
universities in Scotland.
