Population (1) – Birth and Death
Rates
To be able to explain why birth and
death rates vary between countries
Population indicators
Can you rearrange to define the following terms?
Death rate
The number of people who live in a given area, usually measured per squared kilometre.
Birth rate
The average number of children a woman is expected to bear in her lifetime
Infant mortality rate (IMR)
The growth (or decline) of a population. It is measured birth rate minus death rate. Migration may
also play a role.
Natural Increase
The number of deaths of infants under one year old per 1,000 live births in a year.
Life expectancy
The number of births per 1,000 people in a year
Total fertility rate
The average number of years a person can expect to live
Population density
The number of deaths per 1,000 people in a year.
What can increase Birth Rates?
Classify these as Social, Environmental or Economic…
• Many children are needed to help us work on the land, to carry
wood and water, and to care for us when we are old
• A high infant mortality rate means that many children die before
their first birthday
• Religious beliefs may forbid birth control
• A lack of education, especially for women, has an effect on family
planning
• There is a lack of access to and insufficient money for the supply of
contraceptives
• A large family can enhance a family’s reputation in the local
community, especially for the husband
Why do birth rates fall?
What are the
causes of
falling birth rates as
countries develop?
Government
policy can lead
to…
Emancipation of
women means
more women…
Lower death rate
means ………
Increased
mechanisation and
industrialisation
means fewer
people …..
Describe the distribution of Death Rates in the world….
What leads to lower death rates?
Fill the gap: accidents, Albania, cancer, care, drinkable, France, free,
illness, illnesses, longer, MMR, NHS, pension, rates, Safety, smoking,
stable, stages, wars, winter.
MEDCs such as the UK have death ___________ of 10 per 1000 due to
health ___________ provided by the ___________ which is ___________
to everyone. In countries such as ___________ people have a good
___________ so they can afford to heat their houses in ___________ and
therefore live ___________. In the work places in countries like Sweden,
there is a great deal of care about Health and ___________ issues so they
do not die in ___________. When these people were children, they had
vaccinations against ___________ and so did not die of childhood
___________. In these countries the water in the taps is ___________ so
the people do not die from ___________ such as dysentery. All these
countries including Holland educate the people about the dangers of
___________ so fewer people are dying from lung ___________. As the
countries in the EU are ___________ people are not dying in civil
___________.
Extension….
1. Can you find out and explain why there is a big difference worldwide in Birth
Rates…but less of a difference in Death Rates?
2. Why is it easier to reduce Death Rates than Birth rates?
Getting
Rich
lowers
the birth
rate….
Getting
rich
lowers
your birth
rate…
