6. Opportunity for Innovation
“There’s never been a time where we’ve had
a greater outpouring of discoveries about the
nature of disease. And yet paradoxically,
the ability to turn that information into
clinical applications seems to have
slowed down. If there was ever a time when
we need to figure out how to take this
wonderful scientific opportunity and apply the
most bold, audacious principles of innovation
to make those products happen, it is now.”

This is a national problem, not a state problem
This is a national opportunity in which Ohio can lead, and through leadership, Ohio can become the destination where the very best medical innovation in the nation is commercialized. To date, Ohio has not been a significant player in the development of new drugs. Not a single new drug has emerged from Ohio’s great research institutions/universities (lots of devices, no drugs). It’s not because of lack of innovation or industry; but it’s a lack of a platform that can provide a bridge from innovation to industry, connecting the dots that are already here.We have a model here that solves the problem for Ohio, and makes Ohio the destination for the best innovation from across the nation.
800+ opportunities have been vetted to select and support these projects throughout the country. Of this select group, the most promising initiatives will receive even greater acceleration support and through BioMotiv the companies will be established in the State of Ohio. The attraction process provided through this initiative turns the traditional economic development “company attraction” strategy around: Rather than working to land the entities that present themselves to the State as opportunities, the Harrington Project scans the nation for the best opportunities that exist, spends time working with them to develop them and takes the best of this highly refined pool.
