TGS has 8,700 km of long offset seismic and gravity data in the South Java forearc. The data covers the South East Java Basin which is a large frontier petroleum exploration basin, nearly half the size of the Makassar Strait.
For the first time, the new data reveals a thick package of sediment in a complex geological setting. TGS believes the complexity is a result of its current forearc tectonic regime in addition to its probable earlier history as a rifted fragment of Gondwanaland, as the deeper imaged sediments have similar characteristics to the Mesozoic and Paleozoic of the North West Shelf of Australia.
There are many questions that will remain unanswered until the area is tested. However, with the current 2D seismic grid of ~25 km, tentative assessments of hydrocarbon prospectivity can be made. In terms of petroleum geology, and despite being undrilled, the main elements of a prospective basin are expected to be present; (i) prospective structures (carbonate reefs and likely sandstone reservoirs) in shallow-medium water depths that are (ii) up-dip migration pathways from potential source rocks in the deeper Outer Forearc Basin and Paleogene half-graben under the Inner Forearc basin.
