About the Jewish Holiday called Hanukkah

2. Before I Start
Hanukah is a Jewish festival celebrated at about the
same time as Christmas.
It lasts for 8 days and on each day we (usually) get a
present.
We eat good food as well and go to first and last night
parties.
It is a major Jewish celebration celebrated world wide.

3. Miracle Of Hanukah
Many years ago one of our many great temples got
destroyed by the Greeks. So we decided to get the temple
back. A man called Judah Maccabee assembled his troops
and went out to battle. They won. Later while repairing the
temple they realised they didn’t have enough oil to light
their everlasting lamp. The everlasting lamp is continuously
lit to honour God. Miraculously they found an oil jug but it
still didn’t contain enough oil.

4. Miracle Of Hanukah Continued
Still, they lit the lamp. It was a miracle! The lamp stayed lit
for 8 days giving just enough time for more oil to be made.
The reason it takes long time for more oil to be made is
because it has to be pure. That means that to make the olive
oil you have to get one drop from each tree.

5. Ingredients
A Hanukiah (also known as a menorah).
Candles (preferably the special Hanukah candles).
Matches (any type).
A prayer book.
Good food
A dreidel
Hanukah gelt

6. Hanukah games
The main game is the dreidel game. It is played by spinning
the dreidel like a spinning top. The aim of the game is to
obtain all the Hanukah gelt that is in front of you. The letter
shin means you put one coin in. the letter gimmel means
you get it all. The letter nun means that you get nothing.
And the letter heh means that you get half of the coins.

7. Food For Hanukah
Because of the miracle of Hanukah we usually eat oily food.
Some of that food is:
-jam doughnuts
-latkas (also known as hash browns)
-chocolate gelt (also known as Hanukah gelt)

8. Method
1. Cook the food
2. Light the first candle
3. Say the prayers
4. Sing some traditional songs
5. Eat the food
6. Play the dreidel game
N. B: repeat every night for 8 nights every time adding another candle.
