We live an age where the playing field of business has been rendered more level than
ever due to the Web. Sole traders and small business are now able to reach the same
global markets that were previously only the domain of the giant multi-national
corporates. Thanks to social media and Web 2.0 technology we’ve seen a shift to the
democratisation of communication as the world continues to move online.

Social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter are the perfect vehicle for small
business as they afford the opportunity to network, converse, connect and engage with
potential customers. To assist small business engage in this arena, I have assembled what I
believe to be the Top 10 best social media marketing tips available today.

By simply following these easy steps you will find yourself ahead of many of social media
users today. And if used correctly, this knowledge will significantly increase your social
media experience.

Customize
No matter the social network, they
all come with a standard set of
defaults. Good news is they can be
customized to suit your unique
branding.

So whether it’s a Facebook Page, a Twitter
background, or a YouTube channel, make
it a practice to customize.

Continuity of design across your
multiple social media platforms is
good business practice.

Content Strategy
Great design is excellent but
unless you have regular quality
content that will keep your
followers interested, you will
ultimately fail.

 Do NOT  blindly share content about
  anything.

 Cherry pick content that is suited to
  your area and interests of your
  audience and will engage and build
  brand advocates.

Have Goals
The only way to succeed with
social media is set an objective
and focus on it.

 Why?    If you’re not careful, the
    very nature of social media
    can leave you distracted and
    unproductive.

   TIP: Make a checklist of your goals
    (daily, weekly, monthly, annually) and
    check them off as you go.

Stop Selling/Start Networking
   Stop BROADCASTING. The constant bombardment of posts
    that say: “COMMENT ON MY BLOG,” “CLICK HERE NOW,”
    “BUY NOW,” or posts that are “MEMEMEME” are not helping
    you. Individuals will eventually tune you and ignore posts
    associated with your name.

   Social media marketing is NOT traditional broadcast
    marketing. If you want to market successfully in social
    media, focus on the relationship – not the sale.

   Remember: The reason you’ve created a social media
    presence in the first place is to connect with your target
    audience.

   Get to know your followers, listen, appeal to their needs,
    build trust and in time, they’ll let you know when they want
    to do business and/or offer feedback.

   TIP: Be a giver not a taker. Listen more, talk less.
    Compliment more, criticize less. Forgive more, judge less.
    You’ll end up with a community of followers who will
    happily advocate your brand.

Be Creative
              You don’t have to reinvent the wheel
              when communicating on social media.
              Just be a little creative to engage your
              followers.

              You can do this by:
              1. Spice things up and surprise your
                 followers. Swap and change your
                 social media routine.
              2. Introduce ideas like “Friday Friend,”
                   “share your favourite quote,” or
                   “What’s Your Cause,” and invite all of
                   your followers to share links on the
                   social networks.
              3.   Share videos, photos, quotes and good
                   content.
              4.   Share, share, share…

TIP. The more you give in social media,
the more you will receive.

     You need to release yourself from the notion that the content
                    you create is exclusive to you.

• Engage with your audience and encourage them to share what
  you’ve created. Go even further by asking them to share what
  they’ve created.

• Share other’s relevant content. Note: Always acknowledge other’s
  ideas, content and hard work though.

grammar – you are marketing
your business.

   TIP: To avoid mistakes, compose
    your posts, updates or tweets in a
    word processing document. Run the
    ‘spellcheck’ function and then copy
    and paste for submission to the
    social networks.

Sole traders and small business are now able to reach the same global markets that were previously only the domain of the giant multi-national corporates. Thanks to social media and Web 2.0 technology we’ve seen a shift to the democratisation of communication as the world continues to move online. Social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter are the perfect vehicle for small business as they afford the opportunity to network, converse, connect and engage with potential customers. To assist small business engage in this arena, I have assembled what I believe to be the Top 10 best social media marketing tips available today. By simply following these easy steps you will find yourself ahead of many of social media users today. And if used correctly, this knowledge will significantly increase your social media experience.   • 3. TIP # 10 Customize No matter the social network, they all come with a standard set of defaults. Good news is they can be customized to suit your unique branding. So whether it’s a Facebook Page, a Twitter background, or a YouTube channel, make it a practice to customize. TIP # 9 Content Strategy Great design is excellent but unless you have regular quality content that will keep your followers interested, you will ultimately fail.  Do NOT blindly share content about anything.  Cherry pick content that is suited to your area and interests of your audience and will engage and build brand advocates. http://www.bizeez.com.au
  • 5. TIP # 8 Have Goals The only way to succeed with social media is set an objective and focus on it.  Why?   • 6. TIP # 7 Stop Selling/Start Networking  Stop BROADCASTING. The constant bombardment of posts that say: “COMMENT ON MY BLOG,” “CLICK HERE NOW,” “BUY NOW,” or posts that are “MEMEMEME” are not helping you. Individuals will eventually tune you and ignore posts associated with your name.  Social media marketing is NOT traditional broadcast marketing. If you want to market successfully in social media, focus on the relationship – not the sale.  Remember: The reason you’ve created a social media presence in the first place is to connect with your target audience.  Get to know your followers, listen, appeal to their needs, build trust and in time, they’ll let you know when they want to do business and/or offer feedback.  TIP: Be a giver not a taker. Spice things up and surprise your followers. Swap and change your social media routine. 2. Introduce ideas like “Friday Friend,” “share your favourite quote,” or “What’s Your Cause,” and invite all of your followers to share links on the social networks. 3. You need to release yourself from the notion that the content you create is exclusive to you. • Engage with your audience and encourage them to share what you’ve created.
