09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Touched Echo Dresden, Germany 2008 Using bone conduction, a technology developed for hearing devices, the "touched echo" installation in Dresdon transmits sounds of the cities devastating 1945 carpet bombing through the visitors arms when they rest their elbows on the balustrade and hold their ears. Several custom made sound conductors mounted to the railing send sounds of the airplanes and bombs exploding through vibrations, it's completely silent unless you touch the rail. Synopsis "touched echo" is a minimal medial intervention in public space. The visitors of the Brühl's Terrace (Dresden, Germany) are taken back in time to the night of the terrible air raid on 13th February 1945. In their role as a performer they put themselves into the place of the people who shut their ears away from the noise of the explosions. While leaning on the balustrade the sound of airplanes and explosions is transmitted from the swinging balustrade through their arm directly into into the inner ear (bone conduction).
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City 88 Constellations for Wittgenstein Website 2008 “ 88 Constellations for Wittgenstein (to be played with the Left Hand)” is an interactive artwork by David Clark. The piece is a sprawling, non-linear contemplation of the life and work of the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein consisting of 88 interactive flash animations each corresponding with one of the 88 constellations in the night sky. The viewer is invited to navigate through a maze of interconnecting narratives – moving from association to association – in a way that brings Wittgenstein’s work into conversation with our contemporary digital culture. As a nod to Wittgenstein’s concert pianist brother Paul who lost his right arm in World War One but continued to perform work for the left hand, the piece invites the viewer to ‘play’ with the collages using the left hand on the computer keyboard. At the centre of piece is the number 88. It is both the number of keys on the conventional piano and the number of constellations in the night sky (as determined by contemporary science). Music and the night sky both seem to me to stir up the limits of our understanding of existence. The constellations also provided me with a structure. The work is like a ‘connect the dots’ portrait of Ludwig Wittgenstein. I have drawn the facts of his life together and numbered them but it is up to you to connect the dots.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Chaos Thaoghaire Dublin, Ireland Ongoing Chaos Thaoghaire events feature a lineup of live storytellers, usually between three and seven (we sometimes allow for exceptions), and a set of brain-boiling games, all based around a theme. The structure is simple: each storyteller speaks for five to ten minutes, give or take. And between each round of storytelling is a round of games. At the end of the night, everyone claps and says how good it was. Will you get into our van and help us find our lost puppy? The theme is in the form of a statement. For example, “Family is a form of psychological torture,” or we might pick something more literary: “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” You’ll see when you come that we’re not all that faithful to the theme. We drag it along behind us or chase it on the horizon, but we’re really just looking at the scenery. “ It’s as if the Golden Girls were running a bingo night in a mental asylum where everybody had the wrong medication,”

09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City MacGuffin A MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin or maguffin ) is "a plot element that catches the viewers' attention or drives the plot of a work of fiction". [1] The defi nin g aspect of a MacGuff in is that the major players in the story are (at least initially) willing to do and sacrifice almost anything to obtain it, regardless of what the MacGuffin actually is. In fact, the specific nature of the MacGuffin may be ambiguous, undefined, generic, left open to interpretation or otherwise completely unimportant to the plot. Common examples are money, victory, glory, survival, a source of power, or a potential threat, or it may simply be something entirely unexplained.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Use of Narrative in Interaction design 2004 The use of personas has a history going back to the early nineties, but it was only with the publication of Alan Coopers The Inmates Are Running the Asylum3 in 1998 that the technique was semi-formalised and popularised. A persona is an artificial character invented to help a designer understand their end user. They are bestowed with characteristics and are assumed to be in particular environments based on known users behaviours. Personas are amalgamations of key cross sections of user demographics and are useful tools, especially in design processes which involve large teams and individuals of different backgrounds and expertise. Instead of each individual or sub-team working to some poorly digested ethnographic statistics and personal assumptions, they are all designing with a fleshed-out, three-dimensional individual (albeit a fictional composite) in mind. While personas are primarily used in the field of interaction design, they are applicable to all types of design, including product design. “ We found it useful to think in terms of a film production crew. On a film production everyone is inter-dependent: the actors need the screenwriter’s words; the cinematographer relies on the skill of the lighting technician; the editor depends on the script supervisor’s continuity notes. Through it all, the crew relies on one item: the script. The script provides the underlying structure for all of the production’s activities, guiding everything from shot composition to sound design.”

09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Memoirs of a Computer Obsessive Joseph Malia 2006 In this project Joseph Malia contextualises his work through the use of a fictional short story documenting a hypothetical scenario. It documents the obsessive interaction a man has with his technological devices, to the point where he literally blocks out the external world. This almost leads to the destruction of his relationship with his girlfriend. He then enters a sort of ‘rehab’, mediated through yet more technological devices. The presentation of the project in the format of an illustrated short story allows a quicker and more immersive understanding in the viewer than other formats might.

09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City The Listening Post Science Museum, London 2009 Listening Post is a ‘dynamic portrait’ of online communication, displaying uncensored fragments of text, sampled in real-time, from public internet chatrooms and bulletin boards. Artists Mark Hansen and Ben Rubin have divided their work into seven separate ‘scenes’ akin to movements in a symphony. Each scene has its own ‘internal logic’, sifting, filtering and ordering the text fragments in different ways. By pulling text quotes from thousands of unwitting contributors' postings, Listening Post allows you to experience an extraordinary snapshot of the internet and gain a great sense of the humanity behind the data. The artwork is world renowned as a masterpiece of electronic and contemporary art and a monument to the ways we find to connect with each other and express our identities online.

09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City The Long Tail Economic Theory The Long Tail (a phrase coined by Chris Anderson in his book The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business Is Selling Less of More) posits the theory that selling a large variety of niche items in small quantities can compete with the more standard business model of selling a small variety of items to a large number of people, given that the sales potential is about equal.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Locus of Control Social Psychology Theory 1954 Individuals with a high internal locus of control believe that events result primarily from their own behaviour and actions. Those with a low internal locus of control believe that powerful others, fate, or chance primarily determine events. Without a high internal locus of control, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to engage in entrepreneurial activity. Fortunately it can, to an extent, be learned. See also; learned helplessness.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Psychological Theory 1943 The image to the left illustrates that we a have a hierarchy of needs. Each level of the pyramid must be fulfilled before we can progress to the next, culminating in “self-actualization”. If we wish to foster an atmosphere of entrepreneurialism, we must ensure that more fundamental needs of the populous are met first.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Entrepreneur of Life Book The term Entrepreneur of Life reflects a basic trend in today's socie ty wh ic h dem ands people to take on a more active role in life, i.e. in all of life's dimensions. As traditional patterns of living and decision mak ing increa singl y lose the ir power to provide individuals with a sense of orientation and security, while the number of options and alternative courses of action to choose from is rising, more and more decisions and choices are left to the individual. The erosion of relieving certainties and institutions does not only open up the potential of increased opportunities to design and create one’s own life but it is inevitably linked to an increasing (formal) pressure to actively organize and manage life, a need for self-governing.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Micropayments Business Model Micropayments are small financial transactions (usually less than US$1). 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City amihotornot.com Rating/dating website 2000 Created by James Hong and Jim Young to objectively settle a bet about the attractiveness of a passing woman, the site rapidly became extremely popular. In an effort to cover their bandwidth costs, the pair added a dating service to the site in an effort to monetize it. They ultimately sold the site for $20m in 2008. It is possible to be an accidental entrepreneur.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Apps The world wide web is on the way out. Increasingly the way we consume internet-based media is becoming app-based. This has both its advantages and disadvantages, but by and large, customers are happy to pay (small amounts) for a specialised and directed service.

09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Fiat Mio Crowdsourced Car 2009 The car industry is probably one of the most conservative when it comes to design processes, but now Fiat is trying to change that with their new concept car, Fiat Mio. Fiat Brazil have created an online platform, where users can submit ideas for their own visions of the car of the future. Ideas are rated and discussed by community members and Fiat designers and engineers are trying to translate the best ideas into a new product - the Fiat Mio (My Fiat). Time will tell whether Fiat Mio is simply a publicity stunt or a serious attempt to involve users as a real source of inspiration. The concept car will be revealed at an auto show in Sao Paulo in October 2010, but already now, you can see sketches and models online.

09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Hidden Garden Dublin, Ireland 2007 In late 2007, Kevin Downey contacted Dublin City Council to see what they thought of handing over a disused plot of land, cornered by three streets, to the residents of Summer St. North for the purpose of growing fruit & vegetables. It was a vague idea, and after visiting the site, it was looking to be a pretty scary idea. The plot of land in question was used as a dumping ground for all kinds of household waste for over 30 years. Dublin City Council regularly cleared the place, to make way for more household rubbish, and on it went. We applied for various community funding and have been generously supported by Agenda 21, Croke Park and RAPID in the form of grants for a poly-tunnel, fencing to make the garden secure, garden sheds, tools, plants, topsoil, raised beds, a wormery, water harvesters and a community art project, and much more. And we’re not done yet. Plans are afoot to engineer a bike, when cycled, will pump water from the buried tank into the poly-tunnel irrigation system, or to raised water butts. We also applied for funding to re-route water from the roofs of houses into water butts which will be located outside their gates, adjacent to the garden.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Dunbar’s Number Dunbar's number is a theoretical cognitive limit to the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships . These are relationships in which an individual knows who each person is, and how each person relates to every other person. Proponents assert that numbers larger than this generally require more restrictive rules, laws, and enforced norms to maintain a stable, cohesive group . No precise va lue h as been propose d for Dunbar's number. It lies between 100 and 230, but a commonly used value is 150.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Public Clocks Ireland The image to the left is the Shandon Bells in Cork. It’s known locally as the “Four-faced Liar” as the time is never shown correctly on any of its clock faces. Incorrectly set public clocks are endemic in Ireland. Could it possibly be indicative of a lack of civil interest?
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Sleeping Rough Dublin, Ireland According to last year’s Designing Dublin report, 98 people sleep rough every night in Dublin. This equates to about 0.0002% of the urban population, yet large amounts of money and effort are directed toward making the urban environment as uncomfortable as possible to deter these people (as though anyone would choose to sleep rough, given other options). Surely a direct intervention at the source of the problem would be a better use of resources?

09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Pizzas for the People Hwang Kim 2010 In the course of a long running ideological conflict North Korea is one of the most culturally isolated countries in the world, which reject any foreign influences through a tight control of media and communication equipment. To protect the NK identity from potential damaging western influences, short wave radios for example are banned while TV receiver are locked to tune only to the 3 official channels. Paradoxically, with the support of pizza loving leader Kim Jong-il the first-ever Pizzeria was recently opened to provide an authentic Italian experience for a minority of wealthy political elite. With the aim off challenging current cultural obstacles in North Korea, I have contacted a number of Chinese smugglers in China to distribute illegal propaganda over the border to North Korea, through the popular DVD format, which players are widely found in NK homes. The Pizza to NK is the first in a series of designed insertions that explores how design can playfully contribute and impact on a social and cultural level, subtly challenging an ideological status quo.

In the Chilean city of Iquique, Elemental were asked to settle a city-centre community of long-term squatters on a very limited budget. Their response, Quinta Monroy, was a development of halffinished prefabricated structures, designed to facilitate self-build expansion by a further 50 per cent at minimal cost.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Grey Goes Green Rotterdam, NL 2010 Grey goes green in central Rotterdam where the Parking Garage Westblaak is being transformed from a block of concrete to a green oasis. The new parking garage named Green Park will be covered with various plants and the structure is set to become the largest green facade project in Europe. Aside from looking pretty, the vegetation will help offset Co2 emissions, improve biodiversity and absorb rain water.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Eat Limerick Limerick, Ireland 2010 The urban dweller’s relationship with the city is in some ways perverse. We move through ‘public’ places in a constant state of flux, only permitted to perform certain actions in certain places at certain times. Even to loiter is deviant and to touch (bar the occasional button or non-automatic door) is at best odd. Stranger again is our relationship with food. In a city the size if Limerick ample supplies for more than 50,000 inhabitants must be imported, consumed and disposed of every single day. Our understanding of food is thoroughly divorced from its origins. Richard Wentworth has said ‘a city denies weather’. It also, in a bigger way, denies the seasons. We have forgotten what a bizarre thing it is to eat a strawberry on any day of the year we wish. Limerick is an unusually green city, full of lawns, scrubby wasteland and grassy patches. The city is on the Shannon’s floodplain, making the soil rich and full of nutrients. It seems right to turn some small part of this land over to productive use - a little part of our parks can nourish us and hint at their historical roots as commonage. Whoever wants to can take charge of a small patch and provide delicious things of their choosing to strangers and passers by. People can walk through the city, nibbling and foraging as they go, like a peckish flâneur.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City L.A.S.E.R. Tag Graffiti Research Lab 2007 Graffiti Research Lab and friends hacked together a high powered projector with some computer components and a camera to track the writings of a 60mW Green Laser on the side of a building in Rotterdam and project it as blue graffiti.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Graffiti Writer Applied Autonomy 2008 GraffitiWriter is a tele-operated field programable robot which employs a custom built array of spray cans to write linear text messages on the ground at a rate of 15 kilometers per hour. The printing process is similar to that of a dot matrix printer. GraffitiWriter can be deployed in any highly controlled space or public event from a remote location.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City The Golden Institute Sascha Pohflepp 2009 The Golden Institute is a project which explores the hypothetical alternate history of energy generation in the United States, based on the premise that Jimmy Carter got a second presidential term. The Golden Institute is proposed as a think tank (comparable to the RAND Corporation) set with the task of solving the energy crisis. Solutions proposed include manipulating local weather to produce violent lightening storms to harvest energy from and induction loops on motorways to harvest cars’ energy.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Animal Superpowers Chris Woebken 2009 Animals have senses beyond human experience, they instinctively feel approaching tsunamis through low freq uenc ies , co mmun icate thr ough p herom ones o r can navigate through m ag netic fiel ds. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Car Tent While looking like a car cover, the image to the left is in fact a tent, allowing the user to camp, undisturbed in the city.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Wind To Light London, England 2007 ‘Wind to light’ is a custom built, site-specific installation consisting of 500 miniature wind turbines directly generating the power to illuminate hundreds of integrally mounted LEDs (light-emitting diodes). the effect is to create ‘firefly-like fields of light’ where the wind can be visualized as an ephemeral electronic cloud in the atmosphere. the turbine and LED modules are attached to their base by flexible poles which allow them to slightly sway in the wind, animating the movement of the wind by a digital, electronic means.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Piano Stairs Stockholm, Sweden 2009 Take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator and feel better” is something we often hear or read in the Sunday papers. Few people actually follow that advice. Can we get more people to take the stairs over the escalator by making it fun to do?
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Copenhagen Poverty Walks Copenhagen, Denmark 2010 Copenhagen Poverty Walks is a new alternative walking tour giving locals as well as visitors a unique opportunity to experience the city from the perspective of homeless people. The tours are guided by homeless themselves and during the walk, participants will hear about the guide's personal street experiences and universe. Poverty Walks is organized by the NGO project Udenfor (Outdoor). You can read more about the walks on Copenhagen's official tourist website Visit Copenhagen.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Fuck Google Berlin, Germany 2010 For Transmediale 2010 members of the R&D network F.A.T. met in Berlin and produced a series of projects dedicated to the topic of the week: FUCK GOOGLE. In addition to on-site workshops, F.A.T. Lab built a fake Google Street View car and took it out for a ride in the city of Berlin. Watch the hilarious video, in which the fake Google car gets lost (the driver has to ask for directions), jams the traffic and in other ways attracts negative attention.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Clip On Atelier Van Lieshout 2004 Parasitic architecture which clips on to existing structures like a tick.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City TweenBots NYC, USA 2009 TweenBots are human-dependent robots that navigate the city with the help of the people they meet. The bots themselves are relatively 'dumb', but equipped with cuteness, they manage to get strangers to interact and collaborate. The robot to the left can only travel forward in a straight line. It is not externally controlled. It has a little flag which says he hast to get to a certain address and asks for help. Passers-by help him out by pointing him in the right direction.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Buckybar Rotterdam, NL 2009 Bucky Bar is a spontaneous and temporary public building made entirely of umbrellas. Visitors were asked to show up with an umbrella at an outdoor location on a Friday night in Rotterdam, NL. With the help of a team of architects, the umbrellas were then used to build a fully equipped bar, complete with DJ and drinks. 300 people turned up at the event, and just as it began, the beautiful building ended its life spontaneously when the Police showed up at 2:00 AM. Bucky Bar is a project by the DUS Architects and the Studio for Unsolicited Architecture, produced to coincide with the opening of the Architecture of Consequence exhibition at the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi).
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City City Eyes Amsterdam, NL 2010 City Eyes is a project from 2008 by DUS Architects that addresses the border between the private and public domain. Through a series of events in Amsterdam, the architects played with the characteristics of the window as a screen between interior and exterior. See for instance the performative project "breakfast" (image) which connects a living room with the street outside.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Urban Wayfinding for Kids Copenhagen, Denmark 2010 Pavements in some areas of Copenhagen have recently been marked with mysterious cartoon-like labels. The street artist behind the labels turn out the be the City of Copenhagen, and the aim is to make the streets safer for school kids. By following the labels, kids are able to find the safest route between destinations in school districts. The system is personified by a cartoon character named 'Max'. Footprints are used to visualize a route and when there is a crossing or turn to make, Max will show up and point in the direction.

09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Trash AnyColourYouLike NYC, USA 2009 TRASH: anycoloryoulike is a remarkable art intervention for urban beautification and environmental awareness. The project is developed by the New York based artist Adrian Kondratowicz who created colorful trash-bags and distributed them to members of his local community. By using the new bags instead of the traditional ones, the standard piles of trash on the streets were transformed into vivid sculptures of color. The project has been a massive success and the community around it seems to be growing and spreading to other cities. And naturally, the bags are 100% biodegradable.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City I Left This Here For You To Read Boston, NYC, LA 2009 "I left this here for you to read" is a magazine-project by the artist Tim Devin. About once a month, the magazine is printed in just 50 copies that are left for random people to find at public places, such as park benches, on buses, in airports etc. The magazine is distributed on Boston, New York and L.A. Issues are not reprinted and cannot be ordered. The only way to have a copy mailed to you is to help edit, write, design, or distribute it. According to Tim, he prints everything he receives.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Sit Projects, Sustainable Social Service NYC, USA 2009 Sit Projects by Paola Mojica and Daniel Clapp is a series of service-oriented installations inspired by the pressing need for seats at bus and subway stops in New York. The installations are based on disposed chairs that are recycled and placed at selected bus and subway stops. By adding something practical and at the same time unique to the otherwise generic world of public transportation systems, the idea is not just to meet commuter's practical needs but also to create a situation for surprise and social interaction between commuters.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Parking For White Cars London, UK 2006 Parking For White Cars Only is a temporary project by Helmut, which took place in a parking garage in 2006. The best parking-spots were accessible for white cars only.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City The Almost Forgotten Experience of Getting Lost In Physical Space Conflux Festival 2007 Most of us have experienced getting lost and with that in mind, it is usually something we try to avoid. Actually, getting lost is also getting harder because our obsession with mapping things and ourselves (Google Maps, GPS and other locative technologies and services) has radically reduced the risk. But getting lost can also generate fun and interesting reactions and this is theme of two experiential projects by Calvin Johnson that takes place at the Conflux Festival. In Urban Disorientation Game, Calvin will simply invite participants to be lost in the city. Participants are placed in situations where they are made to be disoriented and then challenged to find their way out of this state.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City FileKit Rotterdam, NL 2003 Although traffic jams are probably here to stay, there seem to be very little art or design that address the problem in a creative way (in my work with Fiat some years ago, I worked with the highway as a playground and opportunity to generate social wireless interactions but it was purely speculative and did not materialize). One of the few exceptions - and a concept that actually materialized - is FILEkit, a service briefly provided by a Dutch based group of architects called Artg inee ring FIL Ekit (fil e i s Dutch for traffic jam) is quite simply a collection of items such as a water pistol, a bible, a condom etcetera, which was distributed free of charge by a team of 'FILEangels' on motorcycles. The idea behind the interventionistic service was to turn a negative situation into a positive one by offering jammed motorists an excuse to step out and socialize with each other. FILEkit was distributed in conjunction with the International Architecture Biennale in Rotterdam 2003. The kit is longer in production but at some point it could also be purchased in selected shops.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City WOW! Various 2006 Aram Bartholl is a german artist renowned for making physical abstractions of the digital world, particularly game-worlds. One of Aram's not-to-be-missed performances is inspired by the popular computer game World of Warcraft (WoW). In WoW, the nickname of the player's avatar is constantly hovering above the head of the player so that the identity is visible for everyone else in the game. Aram took this little feature out of cyberspace to see how it would look if people's names would float above their heads in the physical world too.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Bench in a Fence Johannesburg, South Africa 2006 Cascoland is a design project recently carried out in Johannesburg South Africa with the aim to encourage communities to become actively involved in shaping their public spaces. One of the interesting projects to come out of the the process is a work by Bert Kramer and Jair Straschnow who designed a series of benches and chairs to soften the border between the inside and outside of a security fence. The two designers - working on the inside of the fence - observed how local workers on the outside had nowhere to sit, thus having to lean towards the fence or sit on the ground. Jair and Bert did not have a permission to put up anything in public space, so instead they came up with the idea of building sittable objects into the fence. The objects are simply pulled out when needed and pushed back in after usage.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Peep Show Cinema Newcastle, UK 2006 The Waygood Gallery in Newcastle (UK), has put together the cinematic exhibition Little Jewel Cinema, which is inspired by the peep show format of the pre-cinema days. Little Jewel Cinema is located in a shop window of one of Newcastle's busy streets where passers by can stop and peep through 10 holes to watch short films, documentaries and animations made by 13 different artists and filmmakers.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Postal Chairs NYC, USA 2006 In a conceptual protest against the privately owned public spaces in New York City, members of the Graffiti Research Lab came up with a way of making these non-spaces a bit more user-friendly. Inspired by the FedexFurniture project, the GRL team created a bunch of chairs, made of free-of-charge US postal mail boxes and brought them to one of the locations in question. Thanks to the DIY chairs, the space was momentarily turned into real place where people could actually sit and relax.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Mobility Map Barcelona, Spain 2006 Canal*ACCESSIBLE is an online mapping project that shows Barcelona from the perspective of people who have difficulty walking. 40 handicapped particpants use their camera-phones to document every problem and obstacle they encounter on their way through the city. The images are posted to a website and each location and obstacle is described and placed on a map. The result is a map of the parts of Barcelona that is inaccessibility for people confined to wheelchairs. 3,578 architectural barriers and stumbling blocks have been documented on canal*ACCESSIBLE since December 2005. The project recently won Ars Electronica's Digital Communities award 2006.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Paint Grows Soccer Field Sharjah, UAE 2007 As part of the Sharjah Biennial, artist Maider López painted the lines of a soccer field red in a public square of Sharjah, adding goals on either end. Because pre-existing features such as benches and streetlamps were not altered, the square became a strange new site for football matches where spectators relaxed on benches inside the pitch at all hours.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Urban Foraging London, Uk 2007 Foraging is the identification and collection of wild edible or medicinal plants. While successful foraging requires specialized knowledge, experience, and a lack of competition, it offers a relationship to food production and the local landscape critical of urban or rural simplification. Foraging in cities is more difficult than in the country, but there are many useful and edible plants growing on curbs, in yards, and on road medians. Since his university days, Fergus Drennan has sustained himself with the plants he finds growing wild in and around British cities, as well as roadkill. He provided regionally foraged produce to London restaurants and is attempting a year-long diet of foraged-only food.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Reclaim Vacant Lot with What City’s Got Seville, Spain 2004 A proposal made to the city of Seville for legislation to assist in the temporary transformation of public and private solares – vacant lots walled off for security – into public spaces for at least six months. Wall rubble is incorporated into the design, and elements of car and pedestrian barriers are used to construct benches, see-saws, swings, and bike racks with readily available plastic materials like concrete. Instruction sheets were produced to allow residents to construct their own furniture. The project is designed to minimize material movement, cost, and other barriers to change. Santiago Cirugeda is an architect based in Seville who has proposed semi-legal strategies for housing and urban renovation under the name Recetas Urbanas, or “urban prescriptions,” since 1996. He inhabits gaps between laws, exploiting overlap and oversight to practice autonomous architecture.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Search for Outlaw Playgrounds Sao Paolo, Brazil 2007 A research project and workshop on the reuse of residual urban spaces in central São Paulo, Lixurbana documented favourite street soccer sites, DIY playgrounds, and hangout spots that had been “constructed” under overpasses and in vacant lots. The data is presented as a Wikimap website, allowing outsiders to interact with the informal community that uses the spaces.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Archisuit Sarah Ross 2005 The Archisuit project is four jogging suits matching four Los Angeles locations: a Hollywood public library, a Silver Lake fence, the Ronald Reagan State Building, and urban furniturees downtown. The suits’ foam padding fills negative space in each structure and allows the wearer to fit comfortably into, or onto, urban elements designed to repulse them. Similar structures of denial are found in most cities, where they are placed to move people along and prevent unplanned inhabitation. “Testing Resistance” is a compilation of research for the Archisuit project documenting interactions between pedestrian structures and human bodies around Los Angeles.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Parkour/Freerunning Various Parkour (sometimes abbreviated to PK ), or l'art du déplacement (English: the art of movement ) is the physical discipline of training to overcome any obstacle within one's path by adapting one's movements to the environment. It is a non-competitive, physical discipline of French origin in which participants run along a route, attempting to negotiate obstacles in the most efficient way possible. Skills such as jumping and climbing, or the more specific parkour moves are employed. The goal of a practitioner of parkour, called a traceur if male, or traceuse if female, is to get from one place to another using only the human body and the objects in the environment. The obstacles can be anything in one's environment, but parkour is often seen practiced in urban areas because of the many suitable public structures available such as buildings and rails.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Pingpong Table Amsterdam, NL 2001 The Table Tennis Fence subverts the fence as a dividing element. A built-in ping pong table can be opened for neighbours to play with each other, transforming the fence into a meeting place. Share Fence is a related project with cut-outs in the shape of gardening tools like trowels and a watering can. Neighbours can hang tools to be shared in fence holes where they are accessible from both sides.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Anti-Seating Spikes NYC, USA 2003 A catalogue of anti-sitting devices installed to keep New Yorkers on their feet and off anything they could possibly sit on. Iron-and-steel spikes and railings grow like ivy, covering banisters, windowsills, standpipes, steps, and exhaust vents. No horizontal surface is too small to defend from the threat of temporary inhabitation. Installed by property owners, the devices are the product of the defensive, inward-looking architecture that emerged in New York in the late 1960s.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Anti-Skateboarding Devices Various Skatestoppers come in five product lines, all with the same purpose: to prevent skateboarders, bikers, and rollerbladers from damaging structures by riding on them. Made of cast, extruded, or die-cut metal and available in a variety of styles, Skatestoppers can be integrated into new construction or attached to existing structures such as walls, benches, handrails, fountains, planters, or curbs. The metal shapes act as speed bumps by interrupting the long, smooth surfaces that skateboarders use and prevent them from interacting with the built environment.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Protest in Venezuela Venezuela 2002 A strike called by unions and student groups in support of the opposition political party turned into a protest against the dismissal of the governors of Venezuela’s state oil corporations. On 11 April 2002, about 200,000 people marched on the oil corporation’s headquarters. The protest detoured onto the Francisco Fajardo Highway to march 11 kilometres across Caracas to the Presidential Palace, where it came into conflict with a pro-government rally. Twenty people were killed in the clash. Later that evening, President Hugo Chávez was deposed in a coup d’état. He regained power two days later.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City The City Formerly Known as Cambridge MA, USA 2006 The Institute for Infinitely Small Things is a highly original research organization based in Boston, whose mission is to invent and distribute new practices of political engagement in everyday life. This June, they are inviting members of the public to join them in a series of renaming expeditions in Cambridge, which will result in the publication of a new map of The City Formerly Known as Cambridge. To rename a street, park, square or other part of Cambridge, MA, simply attend an expedition and fill out a form to justify your reasons for renaming.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Drop Spots Various 2006 DropSpots is a community project that interconnects people through an exchange of 'gifts' hidden in public space. To become a DropSpotter you simply have to find a public accessible place suited for hiding a gift of own choice, e.g. a poem, an image, a question, etc. Via the DropSpots website you add the location to a map and describe in detail where and how the gift can be found.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Permanent Breakfast Anywhere 2009 Permanent Breakfast is a continuous social experiment that can be executed by anyone, anywhere. The experiment was conceived in 1996 by the Austrian artist Friedemann Derschmid and the basic idea is to bring people together to have breakfast in public spaces that are not necessarily obvious picnic spots, thereby modifying the way we think of these spaces as well as stimulating social interaction in them. Naturally, anyone can do this without it being an art project, so to be an authentic Permanent Breakfast event, there are some rules that participants must follow: The organizer must invite at least four people under the condition that each one of them subsequently invites four other people for a new breakfast to be held somewhere else. And so on. Permanent Breakfast recently came to Copenhagen in relation to the exhibition Instant Urbanism at the Danish Archi tect ure Center.

  • 2. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Touched Echo Dresden, Germany 2008 Using bone conduction, a technology developed for hearing devices, the "touched echo" installation in Dresdon transmits sounds of the cities devastating 1945 carpet bombing through the visitors arms when they rest their elbows on the balustrade and hold their ears.
  • 3. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City 88 Constellations for Wittgenstein Website 2008 “ 88 Constellations for Wittgenstein (to be played with the Left Hand)” is an interactive artwork by David Clark.
  • 4. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Chaos Thaoghaire Dublin, Ireland Ongoing Chaos Thaoghaire events feature a lineup of live storytellers, usually between three and seven (we sometimes allow for exceptions), and a set of brain-boiling games, all based around a theme.

  • 6. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City MacGuffin A MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin or maguffin ) is "a plot element that catches the viewers' attention or drives the plot of a work of fiction".
  • 7. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Use of Narrative in Interaction design 2004 The use of personas has a history going back to the early nineties, but it was only with the publication of Alan Coopers The Inmates Are Running the Asylum3 in 1998 that the technique was semi-formalised and popularised.
  • 8. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Do Break Frank Tjepkema Do Break is a vase designed by Frank Tjepkema. It is ceramic, coated on the inside with a thin layer of silicon. When the vase is smashed it retains both its shape and functionality but also shows its cracks and battlescars. It is an example of how an object can imply a story
  • 9. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Tangents Dublin, Ireland 2010 In Tangents participants took part in a pub-quiz style event wherein they tried to outdo the other teams with better and better stories, sometimes free-style, sometimes around a certain theme. All stories were recorded, on cameras, phones or camcorder and then uploaded to Youtube to be voted on by the public. Individuals who did not come to the event nights could also submit stories.

  • 11. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Human Migration Paths Human migration paths are mappable due to the analysis of mutations in DNA. The story of humanity is encoded in our genes.
  • 12. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Pioneer plaque Pioneer 10 spacecraft 1972 An attempt to make the story of humanity comprehensible to any alien species who may encounter it.
  • 13. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Memoirs of a Computer Obsessive Joseph Malia 2006 In this project Joseph Malia contextualises his work through the use of a fictional short story documenting a hypothetical scenario.

  • 20. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City We Feel Fine Website We feel fine is a web project which scans the internet for blog posts, images and messages which contain certain words pertaining to emotions. These messages are displayed and sorted in a number of different ways, each being a tiny story.
  • 21. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City The Listening Post Science Museum, London 2009 Listening Post is a ‘dynamic portrait’ of online communication, displaying uncensored fragments of text, sampled in real-time, from public internet chatrooms and bulletin boards.

  • 23. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Threadless Web-based Tshirt Company Threadless exemplifies the crowdsourcing design model by asking for design submissions from its own target audience. These are then voted on by the Theadless community and winning designs go into production. By involving their target demographic throughout the process, Threadless ensure a fiercely loyal customer base.
  • 24. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City The Long Tail Economic Theory The Long Tail (a phrase coined by Chris Anderson in his book The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business Is Selling Less of More) posits the theory that selling a large variety of niche items in small quantities can compete with the more standard business model of selling a small variety of items to a large number of people, given that the sales potential is about equal.
  • 25. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Locus of Control Social Psychology Theory 1954 Individuals with a high internal locus of control believe that events result primarily from their own behaviour and actions. Those with a low internal locus of control believe that powerful others, fate, or chance primarily determine events. Without a high internal locus of control, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to engage in entrepreneurial activity. Fortunately it can, to an extent, be learned. See also; learned helplessness.
  • 26. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Psychological Theory 1943 The image to the left illustrates that we a have a hierarchy of needs. Each level of the pyramid must be fulfilled before we can progress to the next, culminating in “self-actualization”. If we wish to foster an atmosphere of entrepreneurialism, we must ensure that more fundamental needs of the populous are met first.
  • 27. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Entrepreneur of Life Book The term Entrepreneur of Life reflects a basic trend in today's socie ty wh ic h dem ands people to take on a more active role in life, i.e. in all of life's dimensions.
  • 28. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Micropayments Business Model Micropayments are small financial transactions (usually less than US$1). • 44. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Hidden Garden Dublin, Ireland 2007 In late 2007, Kevin Downey contacted Dublin City Council to see what they thought of handing over a disused plot of land, cornered by three streets, to the residents of Summer St.

Surely a direct intervention at the source of the problem would be a better use of resources?

  • 59. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Pizzas for the People Hwang Kim 2010 In the course of a long running ideological conflict North Korea is one of the most culturally isolated countries in the world, which reject any foreign influences through a tight control of media and communication equipment.

  • 62. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Eat Limerick Limerick, Ireland 2010 The urban dweller’s relationship with the city is in some ways perverse.

  • 82. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City The Almost Forgotten Experience of Getting Lost In Physical Space Conflux Festival 2007 Most of us have experienced getting lost and with that in mind, it is usually something we try to avoid.
  • 83. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City FileKit Rotterdam, NL 2003 Although traffic jams are probably here to stay, there seem to be very little art or design that address the problem in a creative way (in my work with Fiat some years ago, I worked with the highway as a playground and opportunity to generate social wireless interactions but it was purely speculative and did not materialize).

  • 87. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Postal Chairs NYC, USA 2006 In a conceptual protest against the privately owned public spaces in New York City, members of the Graffiti Research Lab came up with a way of making these non-spaces a bit more user-friendly. Inspired by the FedexFurniture project, the GRL team created a bunch of chairs, made of free-of-charge US postal mail boxes and brought them to one of the locations in question. Thanks to the DIY chairs, the space was momentarily turned into real place where people could actually sit and relax.
  • 88. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Mobility Map Barcelona, Spain 2006 Canal*ACCESSIBLE is an online mapping project that shows Barcelona from the perspective of people who have difficulty walking.
  • 89. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Paint Grows Soccer Field Sharjah, UAE 2007 As part of the Sharjah Biennial, artist Maider López painted the lines of a soccer field red in a public square of Sharjah, adding goals on either end. Because pre-existing features such as benches and streetlamps were not altered, the square became a strange new site for football matches where spectators relaxed on benches inside the pitch at all hours.
  • 90. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Urban Foraging London, Uk 2007 Foraging is the identification and collection of wild edible or medicinal plants.
  • 91. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Reclaim Vacant Lot with What City’s Got Seville, Spain 2004 A proposal made to the city of Seville for legislation to assist in the temporary transformation of public and private solares – vacant lots walled off for security – into public spaces for at least six months.
  • 92. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Search for Outlaw Playgrounds Sao Paolo, Brazil 2007 A research project and workshop on the reuse of residual urban spaces in central São Paulo, Lixurbana documented favourite street soccer sites, DIY playgrounds, and hangout spots that had been “constructed” under overpasses and in vacant lots. The data is presented as a Wikimap website, allowing outsiders to interact with the informal community that uses the spaces.
  • 93. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Archisuit Sarah Ross 2005 The Archisuit project is four jogging suits matching four Los Angeles locations: a Hollywood public library, a Silver Lake fence, the Ronald Reagan State Building, and urban furniturees downtown.
  • 94. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Parkour/Freerunning Various Parkour (sometimes abbreviated to PK ), or l'art du déplacement (English: the art of movement ) is the physical discipline of training to overcome any obstacle within one's path by adapting one's movements to the environment.
  • 95. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Pingpong Table Amsterdam, NL 2001 The Table Tennis Fence subverts the fence as a dividing element.
  • 96. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Anti-Seating Spikes NYC, USA 2003 A catalogue of anti-sitting devices installed to keep New Yorkers on their feet and off anything they could possibly sit on.
  • 97. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Anti-Skateboarding Devices Various Skatestoppers come in five product lines, all with the same purpose: to prevent skateboarders, bikers, and rollerbladers from damaging structures by riding on them.
  • 98. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Protest in Venezuela Venezuela 2002 A strike called by unions and student groups in support of the opposition political party turned into a protest against the dismissal of the governors of Venezuela’s state oil corporations.

  • 101. 09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Permanent Breakfast Anywhere 2009 Permanent Breakfast is a continuous social experiment that can be executed by anyone, anywhere.
