1. Neo Soul is a huge music genre, that is mainly represented and
dominated by an audience of young black women as well as the artists
coming from this genre. Mainly because of the relations to the conscious
lyric’s of certain issues, I included this within my artist interview.
Neo Soul, is not as popular as it used to in this present day, but it’s slowly
growing , as elements of soul are continuously being used in music today
and influencing the new generation. Neo soul infuses with a lot of other
genre’s to create that unique sound. You could say it’s diverse within it’s
self.
2. I also decided to include the reggae genre within my
magazine, as it is a rare genre to be represented by itself
within one magazine, also the fact that reggae is
implemented within some of neo soul’s greatest hits or used
by neo soul’s iconic artists.
These are the main images related to reggae, this is also
partly where I got my inspiration from for my colour scheme
along with the colour of my costume of my model.
3. Buffalo Soldier
Buffalo Soldier, Dreadlock Rasta:
There was a Buffalo Soldier in the heart of America,
Stolen from Africa, brought to America,
Fighting on arrival, fighting for survival.
I mean it, when I analyze the stench -
To me it makes a lot of sense:
How the Dreadlock Rasta was the Buffalo Soldier,
And he was taken from Africa, brought to America,
Fighting on arrival, fighting for survival.
Said he was a Buffalo Soldier, Dreadlock Rasta -
Buffalo Soldier in the heart of America.
If you know your history,
Then you would know where you coming from,
Then you wouldn't have to ask me,
Who the 'eck do I think I am.
I'm just a Buffalo Soldier in the heart of America,
Stolen from Africa, brought to America,
Said he was fighting on arrival, fighting for survival;
Said he was a Buffalo Soldier win the war for America.
Dreadie, woy yoy yoy, woy yoy-yoy yoy,
Woy yoy yoy yoy, yoy yoy-yoy yoy!
Woy yoy yoy, woy yoy-yoy yoy,
Woy yoy yoy yoy, yoy yoy-yoy yoy!
Buffalo Soldier troddin' through the land, wo-ho-ooh!
Said he wanna ran, then you wanna hand,
Troddin' through the land, yea-hea, yea-ea.
Said he was a Buffalo Soldier win the war for America;
Buffalo Soldier, Dreadlock Rasta,
Fighting on arrival, fighting for survival;
Driven from the mainland to the heart of the Caribbean.
Singing, woy yoy yoy, woy yoy-yoy yoy,
Woy yoy yoy yoy, yoy yoy-yoy yoy!
Woy yoy yoy, woy yoy-yoy yoy,
Woy yoy yoy yoy, yoy yoy-yoy yoy!
Troddin' through San Juan in the arms of America;
Troddin' through Jamaica, a Buffalo Soldier# -
Fighting on arrival, fighting for survival:
Buffalo Soldier, Dreadlock Rasta.
Woy yoy yoy, woy yoy-yoy yoy,
Woy yoy yoy yoy, yoy yoy-yoy yoy!
Woy yoy yoy, woy yoy-yoy yoy,
Woy yoy yoy yoy, yoy yoy-yoy yoy! [fadeout]
Elements of reggae are incorporated within neo-soul. Using the
elements huge icons such as Bob Marley, known for his legendary
music and he still continues to influence many genres to this day. I
took one of his greatest hits “Buffalo Soldier” which was the term
given to black soldiers by the Native Americans, to compare the
buffalo’s the strength and perseverance. This song explains
Marley’s thoughts on black U.S. Calvary regiments and analogise
their battle for survival.
I took the meaning of soldier in this case and implemented the Soul
into Soldier making my caption for my artist “Neo Souldier” Neo
meaning new. The caption meaning the newest soldier of neo soul,
also including the hard work and determination, which links to the
master quote of my double page spread. “Success does not come
without hard work”.
4. I implemented the colour’s associated
with reggae and my model’s costume
(Red, Yellow, Green, Black)
throughout my magazine.
5.
6.
7. Artists such as Lauryn Hill incorporated greatly it within her
music, especially within her time with the The Fugees .
Working along side the Sons of Bob Marley and other
reggae and hip- hop/ RnB artists. They combined reggae
music with other music genre’s which creates the term ang
genre “Reggae Fusion”.
8. I looked at the fashion that was recognisable as
neo soul and incorporated
It with my model’s costume. The statement
clothing included, natural make-up, high head
wraps, assortments of bold and heavy jewellery
and bold coloured or plain clothing. There is also a
close link with African culture and fashion, along
with the bold colours and patterns, beads, big
earrings and the hairstyles, classic’s like the afro or
the bald haircut.
9. I looked at
street/urban/hips
ter style of
fashion for my
magazine , as it is
of a street
etiquette edition
and also the fact
of the different
genre’s my
magazine offer’s.
The statement
clothing includes,
loose/comfortabl
e clothing, casual,
free expression
and trendy. These
conventions also
go along with the
hairstyles as they
vary with the
personality of the
person.
10. This is the urban style I
incorporated within
my images on my
contents page for my
street etiquette.
