1,800 seniors attended an event in Miami-Dade County to educate seniors on the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit. The event was hosted by Mayor Carlos Alvarez and had tri-lingual presentations, materials, and media coverage. Speakers included federal and local experts on Medicare Rx and senior health issues. Seniors were provided information on Medicare Rx and the Mayor's aging initiative and given refreshments. The event helped counsel and enroll dozens of seniors in Medicare Rx plans.

EVENT SUMMARY:
“To Life! Mayor’s Initiative on Aging” is a year-long series of events and awareness
campaign on wellness and safety for residents 55 and over. Miami-Dade County Mayor,
Carlos Alvarez chose to begin the initiative with an emphasis on the Medicare
Prescription Drug Benefit with education, enrollment and counseling.
Speakers included federal as well as local experts on the new benefit and the health
issues of seniors. All materials and presentations were done in three languages –
English, Spanish and Creole to accommodate the more than 1800 seniors and
caregivers in attendance. Media coverage was also in all three languages. In addition to
materials on Medicare Rx and the mayor’s initiative, attendees were provided with
refreshments and supplemental educational materials. Event also included chair-
aerobics and Tai-Chi exercises. Mayor Carlos Alvarez declared January 2006 as
Medicare Rx Access Network month, “a month of special importance, that is worthy of
the recognition of the citizens of the City of Miami”.
