               S3.B.3.1.1: Identify the living and nonliving
                components of an ecosystem (e.g., living
                [plants, animals]; nonliving [water, soil, air]).
               S3.B.1.1.2: Classify living things based on their
                characteristics.
+              Prior knowledge
               resources
               vocabulary
       Before creating their final project students will
        have an understanding of living and non-living
        organisms and how to identify them.

       Students will have been introduced to the story of
        Thumbelina.

       Students will have had hands on experiences
        with their environment in an educational setting.

       Ecosystem, organism

    Procedures
       Introducing Thumbelina: what did she
        encounter/ who and what did she interact
        with in the outdoors?

       Instruct on the difference between living
        and non-living organisms Thumbelina had
        contact with.

       Students will take their own mini adventure
        field trip to the grounds around the school.
        Students will bring notebooks to draw or
        take notes on what they see and observe.

    Procedures cont.
              Talk about findings and decide as
               a class what are the living and
               what are the non-living organisms
               in their environment.

              The final aspect of the lesson is
               the art project.

    The Art Project!
       Students will create their own Poster

       Demonstrating their understanding of living and non-living
        things

       Using new and recycled materials students will make moveable
        pictures/ pieces to place on their posters
+ Inspired Artists
    Philip Ross

    Research based artist
     placing natural systems
     within a frame of social and
     historical contexts
+
    Time
       This entire lesson will be spread out within a few days in order
        to touch on all the aspects of the lesson.

                      The Thumbelina story

                      Introduction of living/ non-living things

                      Outdoor adventure

                      Final art project

    Evaluation

       Informal evaluation

       Students should show their
        understanding of the difference
        between living and non-living
        organisms on their poster either by
        labeling, or using categories.

       Creativity will be important and using
        recycled materials will be encouraged.

    Extensions/ Modifications
       using the computer to find pictures

       drawing utensils

       assistance cutting or using pre-cut
        pictures
+
