Prospective Students
Welcome to the Colleges of Law
For over forty years, The Santa Barbara and Ventura Colleges of Law has been helping
aspiring lawyers become practice-ready attorneys. Widely acknowledged as the legal
education leader in the communities we serve, the Colleges of Law offers a unique part-
time, evening program for less than half the cost of traditional private law schools. We
meet students where they are—providing them with the flexibility they need to obtain a
law degree while maintaining their current careers, family demands, and busy schedules.
Our founders reinvented law school in 1969 and we pride ourselves on our continued
commitment to their innovative approach to education, which embodies these simple, yet
unique characteristics:
Quality - The Colleges of Law is a law school accredited by the Committee of Bar
Examiners of The State Bar of California. We have a long-standing reputation of
providing students with an excellent academic foundation, backed by practical
skills needed to succeed in the courtroom, on the bench, and around the deal-
maker's table. Our bar pass rates frequently surpass those of most other State
Bar-accredited schools, and all of our students gain hands-on experience—and
valuable professional contacts—through pro bono internships within our local
legal communities.
Affordability - Our program costs less than half of programs offered at traditional
private law schools. Many of our students graduate with little or no tuition debt.
2. Accessibility - We believe that motivated, intellectually talented students who
desire to work in the legal field should have access to the high-quality education
that we provide—whether they have demanding work schedules and family
commitments or come from nontraditional educational backgrounds. Our
Admissions Team evaluates prospective students holistically—considering all
factors that contribute to a student's potential success in law school such as life
experience, maturity, moral character, work or volunteer experience, and
communication skills. We do not require LSAT scores for most students and in
some cases we admit students with an associate's degree. Exceptional individuals
may even be admitted as "special students" based on college-equivalency tests.
Classes are conveniently offered three nights a week in Santa Barbara or Ventura
and our program can be completed in 3 1/2 to 4 years.
Practicality - Taught by practicing attorneys and judges, our students learn not
just theory but practical, real-world skills—from taking depositions to writing
contracts to drafting estate plans—that graduates of many law schools are first
exposed to only on the job. We provide students with the opportunity to develop
the skills, professional sophistication, and confidence they need to hit the ground
running as competent attorneys.
We'd like to speak with you about how we can help you achieve your education and
career goals. Contact an admissions representative to get all of your individual questions
answered and learn about upcoming information sessions—where you can learn more
about our J.D. program, take a campus tour, meet faculty and students, and explore
financing options.
*Study at, or graduation from, this law school may not qualify a student to take the bar
examination or be admitted to practice law in jurisdictions other than California. A
student who intends to seek admission to practice law outside of California should
contact the admitting authority in that jurisdiction for information regarding its education
and admission requirements.
Law school is within your reach.
