4. Demand for IT Professionals in The Netherlands IT Vacancy Trends In March 2009, The Netherlands saw a 27% decline in the number of vacancies advertised online. Although the statistics reveal short term decline, The Netherlands ICT sector will still facing a shortage of 11,714 ICT professionals by 2012. Contract or Permanent Jobs In April 2009, the IT Job Board site in The Netherlands advertised 75% of permanent roles and 25% of contract positions versus 90% and 10% respectively in April 2008. It is obvious the contract market has taken off in the recession.

6. Demand for IT Professionals in The Netherlands Demand by Skill Developers, testers, business analysts and project managers now equate to 43% of jobs onsite. Tester roles are demonstrating steady demand as projects commissioned in 2008 need testing skills to move towards completion in 2009. Developer and project manager roles have declined by 3% and 5% respectively. Security professionals are increasingly sought after as organisations need to contend with new challenges posed by the Web 2.0 world and wireless devices and new security risks evolving from Cloud Computing and SaaS.

7. Demand for IT Professionals in The Netherlands Future Skill Predictions According to Computer Week, the following skills are expected to be among the hottest for 2009-2010: 1. Help Desk / Technical Support 6. Security 2. Programming / Application Development 7. Web 2.0 3. Project Management 8. Data Center 4. Networking 9. Telecommunications 5. Business Intelligence In addition to the above skills, IT Job Board.nl also envisages that the growing trend towards SaaS and SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) as well as ‘Green Computing’ will have a direct impact on the demand for infrastructure specialists. Developers with experience in open source will also increase in demand as i t is believed that 40% of IT jobs will be linked with open source by 2020.

9. Companies Appetite for IT Recruitment Are Companies Planning to Recruit? Survey results concerning employers planning to recruit IT professionals in 2009 are as follows: - 56.2% of employers stated they were anticipating to recruit; - Only 3.3% of recruiters stated they would not invest in IT-related projects in 2009. For those companies not recruiting, the main reasons are: - They have enough IT employees (30%); - They are cutting back their IT related projects due to the financial situation (10%); - They are proceeding to recruitment freeze (6.7%); - They have just finished hiring (6.7%).

10. Future Challenges for the IT Recruitment Market One of the key challenges for the future of the industry and IT recruitment is the lack of new talent entering the industry. Attracting Young People Over the past 7 years, the number of students enrolling in ICT studies in The Netherlands has declined. In 2008 however, the number of new 1st year university students has grown by 9.4% and numbers enrolling in HBO courses increased by 6.2%. Despite the short-term uplift, this will remain a key issue for the ICT sector for years to come. As a result at the end of 2009, the ICT office will commence an action program which will improve the perception of the industry to increase the number of enrolments in ICT courses.
