Part 1. Nation Report of Mexico By Candace L. Conti
Geography of Mexico Mexico is located in the southern portion of North America located in a region known as middle America. I t is the northernmost constitute of Latin America and is the most popular Spanish speaking country in the world! Mexico is home to The Trans-Mexican Volcanic belt- a volcanic belt that extends 900 km from west to east across central southern Mexico and there is a list of several islands that are in and around Mexico as well..
Mexico has a 9,330 km coastline which includes The Gulf of Mexico, The Pacific Ocean, and The Caribbean sea. How cool is that! Several important Mountain ranges dominate Mexico landscape as well. Including the most famous Sierra Madre del Sur and Pico de Orizaba and the Peninsular Ranges. Mexico has nearly 150 rivers! Yet still water volume is unevenly distributed through out the country. Mexico is one of the most seismological active regions on the earth! The motion of these plates causes earthquakes and volcanic activity.
The People of Mexico Mexico has a population of over 92 million people. More than two thirds of these people live in cities and small towns, and the rest settle in rural areas. The capital of Mexico city alone has over 20 million people. It is the second most populated city in the world. Most Mexicans would refer themselves as Mestizos-someone who is both a descendant of both native Americans and Europeans.
There are 12 Million Indigenous people that live in Mexico of many ethnic groups that account for 10% of the population. The people of Mexico still to this day live in similar fashions just like their ancestors did. Government programs have helped to introduce modernization and intimate mainstream of Mexican life style. Mexicans are proud to be associated with rich heritage of some notable people who became famous for their work including: Guadalupe Victoria the first President of Mexico, or Octavio Paz a writer, poet and diplomat. The list goes on.
Culture of Mexico Mexico’s people way of life introduces many old customs from their Indian and colonial period. Mexico changed quite rapidly in the 1900’s. Life in the cities became quite similar in that of the United States, but Mexican villagers still follow the older way of life. Today many households in Mexico consist of an average of five or six people in a home.
In many homes, several generations of the same family still live together and the living quarters are quite small than what we are used to here in the Unites States. Although Spanish is the official language of the country, most Mexican Indians speak their own ancient language as well. Women now have jobs outside of the home where before that was looked down upon. The women living on farms these days now work in the field as will the men if not attending school whereas boys in the city would take a part time job instead of tending to the fields.
History of Mexico The history of Mexico covers a period of more than two millennia. Mexico was first populated more than 2,000 years ago when the country produced complex indigenous civilizations before being conquered by the Spanish Empire in the 16th century. in 1519, the first Spaniards arrived in Mexico and absorbed the native people into Spain's vast colonial empire. For three centuries, Mexico was a colony .
During the time Mexico was a colony, it lost more than half of their indigenous people. Formal Independence from Spain was recognized in 1821. By 1846, The Mexican American War broke out. Two years later, The Mexican American war ended with Mexico ceding almost half of its terrority to the United States. The Mexican Revolution in 1910 to 1929 resulted in the death of 10 percent of the nations population, but finally brought an end to the system of large land holdings that had originated with the Spanish conquest.
