People were dismayed when Bungie decided they weren’t going to make Halo games anymore, but new developer 343
Industries have taken the mantle and produced another Halo game with Halo 4.
It plays like any other Halo game before with spacious environments and its game play of combat puzzles when managing
groups of different enemies, and it is still fun.
Halo 4 picks up four years after the events of Halo 3 with Master Chief and his AI companion, Cortana, still peacefully
floating in space in a half­ripped apart ship until the Covenant arrive to wake him up.
The two are then hurtled into a nearby planet full of Covenant and Forerunner (an ancient race of enlightened beings)
forces while fighting an ultimate villain who is not explained unless you dig deeper into the fiction through the campaign’s
well­hidden terminals.
There are a few new enemy types that make up the Forerunners, but it’s a little disheartening that you are this stranger in a
strange land on the other side of the universe and you are still fighting grunts, elites and jackals. Grunts still run away from
you, elites do that annoying sidestep and jackals use shields and snipers.
Meanwhile, Cortana is suffering from rampancy from living past her program’s life expectancy, so Master Chief and she
must also deal with her impending death. It’s in those moments of rampancy that Master Chief’s character gets fleshed out
more than the stoic, quiet protector that he has been in every game prior.
Unfortunately, his monotone voice and inability to remove his helmet does not convey much emotion, so some intense
scenes become laughable due to his ‘brick wall’ attitude.
Halo 4’s competitive multiplayer gets modernized with all the facets that first person shooters have had for years such as a
progression system that unlocks new weapons when you level up, a create­a­class system, killstreaks (called ordinances)
and even killcams. It feels weird that the once king of multiplayer is borrowing aspects from its peers, but it has evolved the
game to be much faster and still feel fresh against its successful sci­fi aesthetic.
Spartan Ops is the new four player co­op mode that replaces Halo Reach’s Firefight mode and is more objective­based
than simply fighting off wave after wave of enemies. It is broken up into episodes that take place six months after the end of
Halo 4’s campaign with five missions in each episode, and should take you around an hour to finish an episode. There is
only one episode on the disc, but the developer plans to release a free new episode each week for the next nine weeks.
Spartan Ops is not especially hard even by yourself, since you respawn with no progress lost when you die, so it’s okay to
be careless and win by sheer attrition.
343 Industries did not screw up Halo, yet they did not take full advantage of the slightly blank slate they were left with to
make it their own.
What they have made is a fully featured campaign, a revamped multiplayer that is still fun and additional co­op content to
keep you checking back each week. Halo 4 is now available for Xbox 360.
