 Hypodermic syringe theory

 Mass Audience Theories:
       Hypodermic Syringe Theory
       Sensitisation theory

 Audience pleasures
Hypodermic syringe theory
 My target audience are primarily passive, and it was expected that
my production would have a homogenous effect on my
audience, as my production is aimed at lower income brackets.
Mass audience theories such as the hypodermic syringe theory
can be successfully applied. Common ideologies such as good
triumphs over evil, and gambling is bad are injected into the
audience. In my production the protagonists (Nathan and Curtis)
can be seen as the good, and the Don and his bodyguard can be
seen as the bad. The bodyguard is shot, and this portrays the
ideology that good always triumphs over evil. Another
ideology, that gambling is bad can be seen when Nathan and
Curtis are put into life threatening situations, due to it.
Sensitisation Theory
 The sensitisation theory is a mass audience theory
that can be applied to my production, as it requires
the audience to be relatively passive, which my
working class audience are. This theory suggests
that the audience would become sensitised to the
violence displayed, such as the blood splatter. After
seeing this the audience would be taught to not
engage in violence such as this themselves.
Audience Pleasures
 Audience may also be watching the production for
pleasures such as counter culture: As the audience may
enjoy the life threatening situations which Nathan and
  Curtis experience.

 They may also gain emotional pleasures, as in the end
Nathan is forced to kill Curtis, which could result in
crying, and also when the bodyguard is shot the
  audience may be happy.
Decisions made based on
    audience feedback
 My focus group and questionnaire led me to decide that a
soundtrack would be more popular with my target audience,
because of this I decided to use a soundtrack in my production,
which worked relatively well. This audience may want a
soundtrack as overall a soundtrack would appeal to a mass
  market audience.
 My focus group also led me to decide a reasonable amount of
gore should be added to the production, which the blood
splatter can show. This audience may have requested this to
provide entertainment, and escapism (as the blood splatter
may be a bit more gory than the real thing).
 My Questionnaire also led me to decide the amount of
characters featured in my production should be kept as small
as possible. This is this would fit conventions of a simplistic
storyline which appeals to my working class audience.
How connotations and ideologies
  have attracted my audience

 (1)Curtis and Nathan’s costumes (hoodies and tracksuit
bottoms) can connote that they are young, and have a
low income bracket. This can attract my working class
audience as it can appeal to them.
 (2)The Don, and the Bodyguard are seen to be wearing
suits, which give connotations of wealth and
professionalism, also it is stereotypical of a Don to be
wealthy. Since they are the villains, this can suggest that
the wealthy are bad, and selfish. This binary opposition of
poor vs. rich can suggest that wealthy people are seen
as evil and leeches upon society. This attracts the
working class audience, as they have fixed communities,
and may be intolerable. Also this audience may have a
strict, and selfish boss (which can apply to this concept).
How connotations and ideologies
  have attracted my audience
 (3) Nearly all characters featured in my production
have a gun at some point. This can give
connotations of power, and that men are powerful
(since all characters in my production are male),
which attracts my target audience which are male.
 (4) My production portrays the ideology of the low
income bracket protagonists (Nathan and Curtis) as
striving for a better future. This can attract my
audience as the ideology may appeal to them and
provide personal identity, and if my production was a
whole film, the ending would have featured a new
equilibrium, which would portray positive ideologies
to my audience (you will eventually have a better
  life).

Another ideology, that gambling is bad can be seen when Nathan and Curtis are put into life threatening situations, due to it.

Sensitisation Theory  The sensitisation theory is a mass audience theory that can be applied to my production, as it requires the audience to be relatively passive, which my working class audience are. This theory suggests that the audience would become sensitised to the violence displayed, such as the blood splatter. After seeing this the audience would be taught to not engage in violence such as this themselves.
  • 5. • 6. Decisions made based on audience feedback  My focus group and questionnaire led me to decide that a soundtrack would be more popular with my target audience, because of this I decided to use a soundtrack in my production, which worked relatively well. This audience may want a soundtrack as overall a soundtrack would appeal to a mass market audience.  My focus group also led me to decide a reasonable amount of gore should be added to the production, which the blood splatter can show. This audience may have requested this to provide entertainment, and escapism (as the blood splatter may be a bit more gory than the real thing).  My Questionnaire also led me to decide the amount of characters featured in my production should be kept as small as possible. This is this would fit conventions of a simplistic storyline which appeals to my working class audience.
  • 7. How connotations and ideologies have attracted my audience  (1)Curtis and Nathan’s costumes (hoodies and tracksuit bottoms) can connote that they are young, and have a low income bracket. This can attract my working class audience as it can appeal to them.  (2)The Don, and the Bodyguard are seen to be wearing suits, which give connotations of wealth and professionalism, also it is stereotypical of a Don to be wealthy. Since they are the villains, this can suggest that the wealthy are bad, and selfish. This binary opposition of poor vs. rich can suggest that wealthy people are seen as evil and leeches upon society. This attracts the working class audience, as they have fixed communities, and may be intolerable. Also this audience may have a strict, and selfish boss (which can apply to this concept).
  • 8. How connotations and ideologies have attracted my audience  (3) Nearly all characters featured in my production have a gun at some point. This can give connotations of power, and that men are powerful (since all characters in my production are male), which attracts my target audience which are male.  (4) My production portrays the ideology of the low income bracket protagonists (Nathan and Curtis) as striving for a better future. This can attract my audience as the ideology may appeal to them and provide personal identity, and if my production was a whole film, the ending would have featured a new equilibrium, which would portray positive ideologies to my audience (you will eventually have a better life).
