2. What and where is the injury
?
WHAT:
Partial tearing of the ligament
Ankle joint is examined and moved incertain
ways, abnormal looseness (laxity) of the ankle
joint occurs
Your ligaments are partially torn
WHERE:
Lateral part of the ankle

3. Bony Structures Involved
 Talus bone
 Tibia
 Fibula

4. Ligaments Involved
 Anterior Talofibular Ligament
 Posterior Talobifular ligament
 Calcaneofibular ligament

5. Initial Signs & Symptoms
 Moderate to severe pain
 Swelling and stiffness
 Minor bruising may be evident
 Decreased range of motion
 Possible instability
 Inability to walk in a normal fashion

6. Treatments
 RICE (2 days)
 Rest
 Ice
 Compression
 Elevation
 Range of motion exercises
 Stretching/Strengthening exercises
 Follow up with icing (pain and swelling goes away)
 Immobilization with air splint

7. Prognosis
 Grade 1 or 2 – 2-6 weeks, sometimes more depends if
you’re doing your treatments and exercises. Your doctor
will do a follow up and trainer to see how you are doing.
