The Ugly: what is broken
1. Downloadof the upgrade fileswill either:

a. First,navigate to“C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload”(youmayneed to
replace C:witha differentdrive letterif youinstalledWindows elsewhere) and
delete all the filesthere.Thiswill giveWindowsUpdate acleanslate.
b. OpenWindowsUpdate byhittingthe Windows key,typing“WindowsUpdate”and
clickingonit.
c. Openup the commandpromptby hittingthe Windowskeyandtypingincmd. Don’t
hitenter.Rightclickand choose “Runas administrator.”
d. Type (butdo notenteryet) “wuauclt.exe/updatenow”— thisisthe command to
force WindowsUpdate to checkfor updates.
e. Back inthe WindowsUpdate window,click“Checkforupdates”onthe left handside.
It shouldsay“Checkingforupdates…”
f.While thisishappening,switchbacktothe commandpromptand enterthe command
youalreadytypedin.
g. You shouldnowsee WindowsUpdate saythatit isdownloading Windows10. Before
youactuallyinstall itthough,backeverythingup.
h. If an error 80240020 isencounteredyoumusteditaregistrykeyinorderto allowthe
update to continue:
Locate the registry key:
