Learning in Hand Podcasting is becoming a new “hip” way of relating education material to students. “Students and teachers from all over the world are learning from audio and video programs on desktop computers, laptops, iPods, netbooks, and other devices” (Vincent)
Learning in Hand With this new technology it allows students to use already existing resources such as iTunes to download educational podcasts to their device, and then use their own existing device for learning!
(reflection) Learning in Hand In my opinion anything that we, as educators, can do to help relate the students to the material will help them learn it quicker and retain it easier. “a-ha”= A teacher can practically create their own series of shows and then the students can download the episodes in order and watch/listen to them as if they were downloading their favorite TV show
There’s Something in the Air: Podcasting in Education This article gives a great example called “Imagine” http://www.educause.edu/EDUCAUSE+Review/EDUCAUSEReviewMagazineVolume40/TheresSomethingintheAirPodcast/158014 From reading this little section of the article podcasting seems like something we should have been doing ever since this technology was introduced, and definitely something that we should use more of in the classroom.
There’s Something in the Air: Podcasting in Education “In April 2005, the Pew Internet & American Life Project reported that over six million adults (eighteen or older) in the United States had listened to a podcast.” (Campbell 2005) We all know that teenagers and school age children dominate every new technology. How many of them have listened to a podcast?
(reflection)There’s Something in the Air: Podcasting in Education This new technology is just as the article says “in the Air” and will be sweeping the country very quickly once more and more teachers start to use this technology. “a-ha”= So many people use this technology already as the article stated, why hasn’t it been more integrated into education in this country? I think it soon will be and as well it should be.
A review of podcasting in higher education: Its influence on the traditional lecture This article takes a look at how higher education will change with the introduction of this assistive technology, podcasting. “... the established routines that treat lectures as the main medium for communication and education are still strong. Lectures as educational episodes are still likely to represent among the most robust methodologies used by institutions to educate their students.” (Moore, Armstrong & Pearson, 2008, p. 18) From this quote we see that some think that the lecture will remain strong and the most “normal” way to educate in higher education.
A review of podcasting in higher education: Its influence on the traditional lecture This article gives three distinct advantages to using podcasting Increasing Flexibility Increasing Accessibility Enhancing Learning
(reflection)A review of podcasting in higher education: Its influence on the traditional lecture Being a college student I agree 100% that podcasting should be used in place of some normal lecture classes This would let the professor record there lecture as a podcast then the student can download it and watch/listen to it whenever they would like to. “a-ha”= From this article we see that we can use an assistive technology to make the life of a college student easier, obviously to me this is a MUST!
Conclusion All in all, as I have previously stated, Anything that makes the material relate to the student better will enhance the quality of education for all involved. Assistive technologies such as podcasting is the way the education world is going and I believe from these three articles especially, we need to only embrace it and try and keep up with the technology in our classrooms.
