3. South Tyneside Tobacco Alliance
• Current approach of the
Alliance
Key issues were:
• Inconsistent support
• hasn’t really taken an
integrated approach
• felt a fresh approach with
new ideas and people was
needed
• Keen to use Think.
4. Aim: To deliver a tangible and
practical innovation workshop:
• Reenergising STTA and wider partners in tobacco control
• Encouraging free and creative discussions around tobacco
control
• Creating high impact changes and creating compelling key
actions to achieve tobacco control
–During pregnancy
–In high prevalence communities
–By routine and manual workers
–By children and young people
5. Aim: To deliver a tangible and practical
innovation workshop (cont…)
• Learning and utilising innovation tools and behaviours that
delegates can apply in their current role
• Understanding how different people think and how they
approach creativity
• Learning how to assess and consolidate ideas
• Getting the group to sign up to key actions after the
workshop
6. What did we do
• Key was getting the
right mix of people
• Allocated 30 places
• Used suggested list
from 10 high impact
changes as a start
• Used a themed matrix
• Phoned around to
recruit in low uptake
areas
7. Preparation
• Clear about what
wanted out of the
session
• Worked to get a good
mix / balance of people
• Briefing sheets –
understanding the scale
• Agreed to frontload the
session
• Event management
• Preagreed groups
8. The session
• Really good uptake –
new people
• 33 people attended
• Good networking
opportunity

• Sessions went smoothly
• Pm was less well
attended
• Took photos / DVD as
evidence

preparation time

want out of it
• Frontload the session
• Make contact with
people after the event
• Have some quick wins
to keep people
interested
Population estimate 151,000
Early death rate from heart disease and stroke has decreased markedly
Early death rate from cancer has decreased faster than the England average
COPD is high and rising
Reducing no of R&M workers who smoke and strengthening TC is a 2010/11 must shift
Increasing early identification of COPD, and people at high risk of CVD is a 2010/11 must shift
Strong support up to and including Smokefree legislation, dropped off, picked up then starting to dwindle (PCT and LA restructures haven’t helped)
People happy to do a bit but very much in isolation
TA needed to be invigorated, new members, new ideas, generate interest
Contacted IDEA and asked if we could have THINK for innovation session based on December event
Agreed and took place very rapidly
Had lengthy discussion with Think about what we wanted out of it – this was very important and Think listened.
Time is precious and we very often don’t get the luxury of being able to think and be creative
- under representation from CYP
Quick win / big idea for each of the 4 themes
Briefing sheets for Think – not from the area – needed to understand the scale of the problem
Frontload – conscious that a full day is a big ask – many people stay for the Am so have to be pragmatic and get as much from them as possible – no formal coffee break, late lunch
Demonstrates to partners that taking a professional approach
People were mixed and placed away from their usual field of work
Lots of new faces
Good buzzy atmosphere
Confident in facilitators who kept it focused and on time
Contact list available electronically – new distribution list already put to use eg lobbying people to contact MP for point of sale
Able to identify expertise
QW – brief advice, 2nd hand smoke, action plans
