“Going Green Without the Greenbacks” presented by Eleanor Olsen, AKBD, principal of Total Spaces Design, is packed with tips to save you “greenbacks”, while “greening up” your home, and saving the planet. Eleanor’s seminar uses the example of a pitiful little house that most other General Contractors would consider a tear down to illustrate how it was turned into a charming cottage on a tiny budget. Total Spaces Design remodeled this house completely, on a very tight budget, using premium materials salvaged from Second Use, and a few other Earth saving salvage opportunities, sweat equity from the homeowner with how to tips along the way and Eleanor’s own unique brand of creativity.

- This house is only 750 sq ft. That is what proponents of the passive house are recommending for square feet for 2 people. You have to really think about how the space will be used and how to make the most of the space you have. The houses in the popular book,” The Not So Big House”, that I tried to use as a resource for ideas, were gargantuan compared to this cozy cottage.

- BUTCHER BLOCK WAS A SCRAP ON CRAIGSLIST ELECTRICAL PANEL COVER PAINTED WITH BLACK BOARD PAINT FOR A HANDY BULLITIN BOARD NEXT TO BACK DOOR This house was so small there was absolutely no place to tuck the cat’s food and water dish out of the way except under this over hanging counter
- FONT CHANGE
- CARPET HAD BEEN STORED FOR A CONSIDERABLE TIME SO OFF GASSING WAS NOT AN ISSUE. CLIENT HAS A HEPA FILTER VACUMN AND THE PILE IS A VERY LOW AND VERY TIGHT COMMERCIAL GRADE.

- Stock Blinds and leftover workroom fabric create a soft subdued view when needed. Another option for insulating might have been Hunter Douglas honeycomb blinds to increase the R-Value of the thermopane glass doors.
- Separate the labor and cost of goods when billing your client
- Keep this in mind when you are billing your clients and plan on breaking out the material charges from the labor charges, so they can get their tax credits
