context)
X is one of the market leaders in the European insurance industry.
The objective of the benchmark was to validate this growth capability of the
DWH/DSS solution
Customer main infrastructure:
Mainframe: IBM servers & IBM DS8K storage
UNIX: IBM POWER servers & HDS USP-V
DatawareHouse / DSS infrastructure running on UNIX platform:
Server: 2 x POWER 795 in turbo mode (20 CORES / 650GB)
Storage: 2 x HDS USP-V (LVM mirror) with 33 TB each, throughput 5 GB/sec

Goal of this benchmark is to validate solution scalability for a 330% volume growth
within the next 3 years.

Benchmark team applied AIX good practices to optimize POWER ressources :

In our case, the optimal number of IFX CoServers was 9. To fit with the HW design, we have
chosen to run with 8 CoServers (2 CoServers per Book)
Book0 => CoServer1 and CoServer5
Book1 => CoServer2 and CoServer6
Book2 => CoServer3 and CoServer7
Book3 => CoServer4 and CoServer8
So, in AIX, 8 RSETs (one for each CoServer) were created with the following command :
mkrset -c <set of cpu> [ -m <memory> ] rsetname
mkrset -c 0-43 -m 0 COS/1
mkrset -c 44-91 -m 0 COS/2

Install a server based on Linux (Fedora 14, kernel 2.6.35.14 x86_64) with the following
specifications:
1-socket Intel quad-core Q9400 (four 2.66 Ghz processors)

Four 500 Gb SATA II, 7,200 rpm disk drives
Note that this configuration costs less than EUR900.

Informix database / setting used during this TPC-C benchmark :
Shared memory sized to 2 GB*,
Nine tables with index & contraints,
No transaction’s application code modification allowed.
Results of the best run :
tpmC-UVA = 610.728
Number of warehouses:55
Number of terminals per warehouse: 10
Warm-up time : 45 mn
Measure time : 240 mn
Conclusion : « This test successfully achieved the 55 warehouses for
10 terminals run, making a total of 550 terminal sessions, which is
impressive for a test hosting both application and the database server
on the same client ».
