7. Department head assembles materials for
review
Voting faculty deliberate and vote
Vote results are forwarded to department
head
Department head provides recommendation
to the dean
8. Dean provides clear explanation of the
decision, and forwards copy of the review
dossier and contract renewal documents to
Academic Affairs for each possible outcome:
3-year renewal
Terminal 1-year contract
1-year contract with possible renewal and
stipulations
9. Academic Affairs provides a response after
review of the following:
Dean’s narrative
Recommendations of department head
Candidate’s review file
Contract renewal documents
10. Unequivocally positive: on track for tenure
3-year contract renewal
Unequivocally negative: tenure not possible, no
desire to retain
1-year terminal contract and dismissal
Problematic but still possible: could make tenure
with a change in direction, desire to retain in
department
1-year contract with stipulations

Conduct the discussion in two parts
Diagnostic review of vita and accomplishments
Evaluative review of prospective success and what
is needed
Focus on the vita and accomplishments, not
on the person
