Mission: Protecting the public against unreasonable risks
of injury from consumer products through education, safety
standards activities, regulation, and enforcement.
Vision: The CPSC is the recognized global leader in

Percentage of business registration requests for www.SaferProducts.gov processed
within two business days
EXHR’s Mission Challenges in 2014
 Challenge 1: Identifying Emerging Hazards and
Protecting the Public
 Reporting Systems – improve analysis from hazard-reporting systems
to identify emerging hazards better.
 Talent – recruiting professional staff to achieve the mission.
 Challenge 2: Prudent and Timely Implementation of
Congressional Requirements
 CPSIA – requires numerous new regulations for years to come.
 Public Law 112-28 – establishes additional mandates and requirements
for CPSC.

  • 2. 2 Mission: Protecting the public against unreasonable risks of injury from consumer products through education, safety standards activities, regulation, and enforcement. Vision: The CPSC is the recognized global leader in consumer product safety. Goal 1: Leadership in Safety Goal 2: Commitment to Prevention Goal 3: Rigorous Hazard Identification Goal 4: Decisive Response Goal 5: Raising Awareness U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Multifaceted Approach to Achieving the Mission
  • 3. • Growth of workforce • Full funding for CPSRMS and IT infrastructure • Full investment in nanotechnology research agreements • Full investment in laboratory equipment recapitalization • Continue Import Surveillance RAM pilot • Reduced hiring of replacement staff – critical vacancy assessment • Deferred several IT requirements until future years • Scaled back or defers interagency research agreements • Deferred lower priority analytical and enforcement  Sequestration was ~5% across-the-board decrease (~$6M)  FY 2014 Appropriations: $117M  Additional $1M for VGB GrantsAreas Impacted in FY13 Changes with FY14 Funding Sequestration and the FY 2014 Budget 3

Performance Measure Statement Percentage of notifications sent to manufacturers named in all reports eligible for the public database within five business days of eligibility determination. Percentage of cases in which staff reviews or refers comments and claims from manufacturers, importers, and private labelers within one business day Percentage of business registration requests for www.SaferProducts.gov processed within two business days

EXHR’s Mission Challenges in 2014  Challenge 1: Identifying Emerging Hazards and Protecting the Public  Reporting Systems – improve analysis from hazard-reporting systems to identify emerging hazards better.  Talent – recruiting professional staff to achieve the mission.  Challenge 2: Prudent and Timely Implementation of Congressional Requirements  CPSIA – requires numerous new regulations for years to come.  Public Law 112-28 – establishes additional mandates and requirements for CPSC.  Challenge 3: Effective Engagement in Voluntary Standards  Prioritization – improve effectiveness of most important voluntary 13
