In a recent study it was shown that Business analytics has a tremendous ROIThe reason is there is so much data available, but often it’s difficult to access and analyse Hard returns: cost savings and increased salesSoft returns:greater productivity, collaboration, and customer service
So, what’s so great about dashboards?!If we look at the evolution of analytical business tools, it wasn’t that long ago that we did things manually and with calculators. The spreadsheet has helped us calculate totals and formulas but it doesn’t allow us to interact with the data. The problem is that standard reports of rows and columns make it impossible to understand what’s going on. And we end up relying on IT or other departments to dissect the data. But you as the business user know what questions to ask, so you need a tool for interacting with the data! Dashboards are the new spreadsheets or at least the next business tool. They allow us to slice and dice the data to fully explore it and come up with answersIt breaks the grip on 2-dimensional analysis
Having source data and dashboard software isn’t enough in many cases. Data can be in an unexpected format and require cleansing or transformation. This requires either data cleansing or ETL software, or deeper skills in the dashboard software.
For example, something as simple as a date field in the format “20121025” becomes a problem because it isn’t a ‘standard’ date format. Properly converting the string to a date requires extracting each piece of the date one by one and then re-assembling them into a standard date format and converting the result into a recognized date format (e.g., 10/25/2012 or 25-10-2012).ETL can be fairly simple (e.g., a database export) or a very complex undertaking (e.g., social media sources) experience doing custom data extraction, or using various software packages that automate extraction. In addition we have assisted numerous clients with mapping data between systems and ensuring the rules of each are understood and followed.
