Today, electronic work instructions software is instrumental to the shop floor. And market leaders are investing in the integration of electronic work instructions (EWIs) with 3D visualization and simulation software, so operators aren’t just following along with instructions, they’re able to view animations of each step and sometimes even improve things right on the spot. Here’s what you need to know about the past, present, and future of electronic work instructions in manufacturing opera- tions management, as well as discuss eight ways they’re transforming the shop floor. From paper-based to next-generation It’s vital that you have clear and repeatable instructions for every manufacturing process. Traditionally, shop- floor workers would hang laminated pieces of paper on the wall with dia- grams and explanations of each step. The shortcomings of this are obvious, particularly when an engineering change order (ECO) was required and those changes needed to be sent to engineering, revamped, sent back to manufacturing, reprinted, relaminated, and so on. If we’re talking about a global operation, this becomes even more of a challenge. The more complex something you’re building is, generally the more complex those instructions have to be, and a paper-based approach can be limiting. But computer technology on the shop floor wasn’t always as easily accessible and widespread as it is today. Since document control software has become widely adopted, however, EWIs have made their way into the manufacturing environment. EWIs have improved the way supervisors and operators build products, and the way they interact with engineers and maintenance personnel. The technology enables a centralized, standardized, and automated document management system, and can be found on most modern manufacturing shop floors. In addition to improving communica- tion and collaboration on the shop floor, streamlining EWIs mitigates many of the traditional risks associated with changing a work order. In the past, an engineering change may have been ordered, but never completed or at least never communi- cated to the appropriate personnel once completed. With automated workflows, notifications can be triggered to ensure the process is completed and the appropriate personnel are notified. Workflows can also ensure that the right instructions are being followed on time and in the context of the manufacturing process. As the use of simulation and 3D visualization software becomes more prevalent, moving from engineering onto the shop floor, EWIs are becoming an even more effective tool. By integrating EWIs with this technology, an operator can watch each step of a process played out via animations. In some cases, operators and supervisors are trained to actually make changes and improvements to these processes in real time rather than waiting for an ECO. Use cases have been around for many years describing the requirements of software development projects. From a developer’s point of view, use cases are often seen as too abstract and too complex to develop code from. Until now, that is. During this interactive talk, presented by speaker Sander Hoogendoorn at Microsoft TechEd Europe 2010 in Berlin, will demonstrate how to model, generate and build smart use cases. This great technique allows you to model use cases at a much more pragmatic, low-granular level, enabling them to be implemented simply and directly into applications such as ASP.NET or Silverlight. Using many real-life code examples, the speaker will introduce both the positive impact that smart use cases have on your layered software architecture, as well as the design patterns required to implement them.

Enterprise mobility has transformed the way businesses engage with their customers, partners and staff,using innovative applications that enhance and accelerate the exchange of critical information. However, mobile applications are only part of the overall solution – integration with existing systems in a scalable manner is equally important and challenging. Enterprises are recognizing the importance of extending their ERP(Enterprise Resource Planning) systems to mobile devices and providing employees with access to internal systems while on the move. This paper examines the approaches for extending Oracle E-Business Suite ERP modules to mobile. It describes the overall architecture and solution, and includes an example of extending the Oracle Applications Field Service module to mobile. In the example, a mobile application is built on the Android platform to leverage the capabilities of the mobile device. Oracle Integrated SOA module is leveraged to expose web services to outside the firewall. Web services can be generated using pre-built packages or custom packages so as to enable required behavior of the mobile application. A middle layer is introduced to ensure security and mobile device management capabilities. The middle layer ensures that the ERP system is not exposed to outside the firewall to protect the system and its data. Once web services for requisite functions are exposed, mobile client application can be developed using multiple options: native, cross-platform and mobile web. The technology used depends on business requirements for usability, functionality and the long-term technology roadmap. Oracle ADF Mobile is an excellent option for extending Oracle Applications modules, as it fits well into the overall architecture stack.

The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
