KEY FACTS:
• Malmgård Brewery in Loviisa, Finland, is located at the
Malmgård estate, which is owned by the Creutz family, a noble
family whose history dates back to the 17th century.
• The brewery specializes in unfiltered, top-fermented ales
without additives.
• Malmgård’s beers are genuine craft beers. The brewery’s
products are produced by hand in batches of 2,000 liters each.
• Malmgård’s beers are a combination of spring water from the
estate, domestic malts, cereals from the farm’s own fields, and
carefully selected hops and British and Belgian specialty yeasts.
• All energy needed for the production process and heating of the
brewery is generated by hydro power.

KEY FACTS/CHALLENGE:
• The process, which is divided into four phases: mashing,
boiling, fermentation and finally bottling and packaging, takes
a total of about four weeks.
• Malmgård Brewery’s production volume is currently about
300,000 liters annually, but we have the potential to increase
it to half a million liters.
• Malmgård Brewery has a few dozens of registered products
and their regular production capacity covers 15-20 products,
including seasonal beers and private-label beers for
restaurants.
• Malmgård’s distribution network reaches across Finland,
Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Estonia. They also distribute
a selection of their Huvila beers in the U.S.A.

SOLUTION:
• VACON AC drives are used in the beer-brewing process to
control three pumps and one fan:
• One of the pumps is used in making wort, i.e. the liquid
extracted from the mashing process during the brewing
of beer.
• Two other pumps are used for transferring beer in the
process and washing the process equipment. The pumps
are controlled by three VACON®
20 drives.
• One VACON®
100 HVAC AC drive controls a fan that
removes steam from the boiling tank.

SOLUTION:
• The use of AC drives in controlling pumps and fans according
to the changing needs improves process control and brings
clear energy savings.
• Smooth starting and stopping of the pumps and the fan also
reduces mechanical stress to the equipment.
