CHANGE IN MEDIA LANDSCAPES DUE TO DIGITIZATION
DIGITIZATION THROUGH THE WORLD OF INTERNET AND THE RISE OF
YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS.
Powerof the internetinthe digital world.
The processof digitizationhasevolvedovertime.Would people like KananGill orthe AIBhave been
successful withoutaplatformlike Youtube?Theywouldprobablyhave toapproachtelevisionor
radioand getrejecteddue totheirsatirical controversial content.Theywouldhave tostandfor
auditionsof televisioncomedyshowsforachance to showcase theirtalenttothe world. Itwould
neverhave workedforthemapartfrom a few stage showstheirbase city.
That is the powerof the evolutionof the internet. The internetprovidesawide platformformillions
across the worldwithideas andvisionslarge enoughtochange the world.
Today we talkaboutthe powerof the internetandthe evolvingnature of the processcalled
digitizationwhichhasturnedthe worldintoaglobal village.
The white andgold(No,the blue andblack) dressthat meltedthe internet.
Thispicture waspostedby Caitlin McNeillfromthe Scottish islandof Colonsay. She wasa member
of the weddingbandinvitedtoplay. She postedthispicture of the dressonTumblerconfusedabout
the colours.Half an hour laterherpost attractedaround 500 likesandshares. It migratedto
Buzzfeed,FacebookandTwittersettingoff asocial mediaconflagration. Evenscientistscouldnot
make out the mysteryof the dress. The picture wasviewed200 milliontimesall overthe world. 6,
70,000 people viewedBuzzfeed’spost.Taylorswift,Kanye westandKimKardashian were some of
the many celebritieswhotalkedaboutit.Hadit notbeenforthe internet6,70,000 people wouldnot
be talkingaboutsomethingsoirrelevant. This alsohas a businessangle toitasnumerousreplicasof
the dresswere createdall overthe worldand people actuallymade moneyoutof it.
Lookingthe global scenariotodaywe getto see thatmore people have accesstomobile phones
than electricity.According tothe U.N,1.4 billionpeopledonothave electricityinIndiabuttheyown
mobile phones. There isagreateraccess to mobile phonesthantoiletsinIndia.
There isa tirade of ideasandopinionsandthere isinformationfloatingacross the world.Dataor
informationisbeingpumpedintothe world. How doyouthinka girl fromCanada calledLillySingh
turnedintoa global celebritycalledSuperwoman?
What isdigitization?
Digitizationisthe processthatallowsinformationof all kindsinall formatsto be carried across the
worldwithutmostefficiencyandintermingleswithminds.A text,sound,image orvoice gets
convertedintodatathat can change the worldwithinminutes. We’ve gone fromletterstoemailsto
instantmessagingandfrombookstoKindle.
Governmentstodayare playinganimportantrole inincludingandelevatingdigitizationonthe
national agenda.The shiftistowardsaccess,adoptionandusage.Policymakersare now moving
theircountytowards advancedlevelsof digitization.In1990, there were 100 millionpersonal
computersworldwide,10millionmobilephone usersandlessthanthree milliononthe internet(
aboutthe size of Berlin) .
By 2010, there were 1.4 billionpcs,5billionmobile phone usersandaninternetpopulationof 2
billion.(Aboutthe size of IndiaandChinacombined).
Reasons behindthe emergence of digitization.
TECHNOLOGY PUSH
Improvementintechnology.
As technologyevolves, the processof digitizationevolves. There ismore informationoutthere to
access. Affordabilityisamajorfactor as there islow cost connection. The availabilityhasalso
increased.
SatyajitRay’sinformationisnowavailable of the internet unlike 15yearsback where librarieswere
the onlymediumtogetinformation.
CONSUMER PULL
There isa wide global market forthe productsof the internet.Consumersare fullyadaptedtothe
digital environment.Theynaturallyexpecttobe alwaysconnectedandare willingtoshare personal
viewsandopinions .There isalways aneedtobe connectedonone digital platformorother.
Eg. Earlierpeople hadtotell youaboutcertainthingsyouwantedto know.A goodrestaurantcan
nowbe checkedoutonzomato.com
ECONOMICBENEFITS
There isa wave of capital gettingpumpedintothe world. The amount of employmentgeneratedis
vast.From a consumer’spointof viewsomeonesittinginJapancan accessinformationabout
someone inScandinavialike HakkanNesserthe authorandbuyhisbooksonline insteadof travelling
all the way there toknowabout him.
Since we’re onthe topicof economy, let’stalkabouthow employment rateshave increased.
Digitization the massadoptionof digitaltechnologythroughconnectedservices anddeviceshas
proventoaccelerate growthand facilitate jobcreation.A 10% increase indigitizationproduces
employmentandreducesanation’sunemploymentrate by0.8%.From 2009 to 2010,digitization
addedan estimatedadded19millionjobstothe worldeconomy. Inotherwordsasthe country
progressesindigital developmentthe more innovative itbecomeswithitsideas.
DEMOCRATIZATION OFCONTENT
Due to the above mentionedpointsanddue tothe improvementinthe ICT technologythere isalso
democratizationof content.Serviceslike Googlemusic,Soundcloud,Itunesgiveyouaplatformto
showcase yourmusicand allow peopletopurchase andlistentoyourwork.Websites like Flickerand
Tumblergivesvisual artiststhe rightkindof platformforshowcasingtheirtalent.A lotof young
artistsget recognizedthroughall these websites. This isconstantlychangingthe waywe consume
content.
Lookingat the aspectof the writtenword, there isa huge advantage intermsof publishing,
distribution andconsumptionof mediaoncyberspace.The amountof restrictionandfilterationsin
printmediawhichhasconstantlybeenathorn inthe worldof journalismhasnow beensolved by
online portalsonthe internet. The freedomof new mediaplaysanimportantrole in providinga
platformforaspiring journalistswhodonotwantto be checkedbythe oral police every time they
wantto write somethinghonestandtruthful foronce.
House of cards episode example:ReporterZoe Barnesfromthe Washington Heraldquitsherjobas
she facesrestrictionsandjoinsanonline portal calledSlugline.comwhichgivesherthe freedomto
exercise andexpress heropinionsfreelywithoutanyfear.
Thisis whatleadsto the mainportionof our paper.
The growth of digitizationandthe digital evolutionthathasledto the emergence of young
entrepreneurs.There are peopleoutthere creatinggames,websites,socialnetworkingsitesand
online portals.Mark Zuckerburgthe founderof Facebookwouldn’thave existedasa name without
the evolutionof digitization.
People are movingfrommainstreamjoboptionstocome upwith unique experimentsof theirown.
Professionslike blogging, andfoodcriticismare openingupnew channelsforyoungsters.Formany
theirhobbiesare nolongerwhattheylove doing,somethingthatkeepsthemactiveoutsideof work.
Theirhobbiesare actuallygrowingintoanotherstream of income.
AksharPathak- He’san artistand graphic designerwhocreatespostersof Bollywoodfilmsbasedon
one elementkeptinassociationwiththe film. His postersare widelyrecognisedinthe digitalworld
and have featuredinover90 magazinesandnewspapers.
Minimal Bollywoodposterswashisbrainchild.Theyexplodedonthe popculture scene concerning
the cinemaof India.Theycapture the true essence of films andtelevision shows. He wasrecognised
throughFacebookandnow currentlyworksforPhantomfilms,AnuragKashyapandZomato.
The viral fever- Launchedin2010. The clipsdissectIndianpolitics, movies,Lifestyle, social concepts
etc. from a verydifferentperspectiveandangle to evoke laughter.
Otherexamples similartothisare SuperwomanandAIB.
Dhruv Viswanath- He isasingersongwriter,astudentfromShaheedBhagatSingh,Universityof
Delhi andnowhe’san upcomingYoutube sensation.
There are people outthere whoare changingtheirperspectivesaboutwhattheywantto do.Kanan
Gill wasa software engineerandhe’scurrentlyone of India’sfavourite stand- upcomedians.
We nowhave a videofeaturingyoungentrepreneurswhohave startedtheirowncompaniesand
theytalkabout howthe digital worldhasworkedintheirfavour.
These are people whohave startedtheirowncompaniesanddependonthe digital worldforthe
successand expansionof theirreachacrossthe country. It’snot absolutelynecessarytohave the
technical no-howwhile adaptingyourideaswithdigitization.Thereare people forhire whocanhelp
technicallyhandicappedpeople toexpandtheirideasonline.Companies like Artistsatwork
productionsandWhack Thwackwouldhave existedwithout adigital platformbuttheirreachwould
have beenextremelylimited.A bakerylike Sugaramawouldnothave the outreachithastoday if
theyhadn’tgone online. The internetasthe perfectmediumforthe growthof digitizationhas
alreadypaveda waytowardsa brighter future. Thisisa platformwhichcanhelpuscreate
somethingmeaningful outof the wackiestideasthatpeoplehave.
In conclusionwhatwe wouldliketosayis digitizationhascreatedanalternate space forpeople to
experimentwithanythingtheywant.
Artists,entrepreneursandindividualshave createdaspace of theirowncreatingemploymentand
boostingthe world’seconomy.
