What Makes a Strong LinkedIn Profile

LINKEDIN PROFILE
Header
The header of your profile is the
first section people see and read
- so make it count! Use a
professional photo that is
cropped to show your face
clearly. Remember that a picture
speaks 1,000 words, so smile.
The headline should be
descriptive and catchy. The
headline is what will encourage
the reader to continue to the rest
of your profile. Adding keywords
will also boost your profile on
search engines such as Google.
Contact information should
always be included but only with
information you are comfortable
posting online. Typically, a work
email address and Twitter handle
are sufficient. Personalizing your
LinkedIn URL makes it easier for you to share it on websites, business cards, emails and presentations.
!
Summary
The biggest mistake you can make for this
section is leaving it blank. The summary on
a profile should be a strong introduction of
your career experience. Using all 2,000
characters and utilizing keywords will
enhance your profile significantly. It’s
important to showcase skills, experiences
and abilities that may not appear in the
bullet point section of your resume. Writing
PAR (Problem-Action-Resolution) stories is
very effective as well. You can also add
media in this section to enrich your profile.

Experience
The experience section on
Linkedin is your online
resume. This section should
be precise, detailed, and
speak to a specific audience.
This section will automatically
be ordered chronologically for
ease of reading. There are
different strategies used in
completing this section. The
first is focusing on
accomplishments achieved in
each role. Another is to copy
and paste from your resume.
And the last method is to
simply list job companies with
a job title, although this
method is not advised.
!
Projects
Listing major projects you have contributed to gives you the ability to build a virtual portfolio. It allows to add
other LinkedIn Connections to show collaboration on a project. By adding a “Collaborator”, the project will be
showcased on both profiles. Projects is a great section for students newly entering the workforce or for
individuals who have held a position for a substantial amount of time. They can be a place to showcase
relevance to the field of interest.

Publications, Education, and More
Other then the publication itself,
often times there isn’t a place
online to note publications
you’ve written. By adding
articles, books, or blog posts to
you profile, and including links,
you’re able to publicize your
work more. Another great feature
in the Education section. Listing
all the institutions in which you
received education broadens
your net for Connections. The
more detailed your profile can
be, the more searches it will
appear in.
