Why Responsive Web Design Isn’t Enough
1. Why Responsive Web Design Isn’t Enough
With the amount of people using mobile devices to access content online, many websites have started
using responsive web design in order to appeal to the greater needs of their online audience. However,
a website that’s responsive to changes in the platform it’s being accessed on simply isn’t enough and
web users are looking for more.
The majority of companies around the world are enjoying the benefits of responsive web design but
they are ignoring the fact that device resolutions and how capable these devices are cannot simply be
divided into a mobile or desktop web based solution.
While it’s important to redesign any website and make sure it works well on all devices, responsive web
design should not be the final goal of any redesign attempt. Whether a website is fully responsive or not
does not make it easy to use, efficient, or sophisticated.
A poorly designed website will not magically become much better designed and easier to use once it
becomes responsive so all aspects of either web design or redesign need to be considered.
The goal of every website should be to engage their visitors and build a strong relationship with their
users. Websites that are easy to use and can be accessed without any issues across all devices should be
what every business strives to achieve.
Great design and an effective content strategy must be utilized to ensure customer satisfaction with
your website is at its highest. Just because someone can access a responsive site on their phone does
not mean they will be happy with it.
The problem that occurs is that many website owners and developers simply switch over to a responsive
design instead of optimizing for one. Nothing is changed except now their audience can reach their site
on any mobile device. All a responsive web design does is adapting current webpages to a certain size
but it does not really make sure that these pages will work well on every mobile device.
Usability and navigation tends to suffer and in the long run users become unhappy. All the content such
as text and images on the website needs to be adapted and changed in order to ensure it runs smoothly
when the site becomes fully responsive.
This not only ensures a better user experience but also less data needs to be used if the design is done
properly and ideal optimization is completed. By simply transferring all the content on the original site
to a responsive one without resizing or further optimizing, load times can increase and the site could
even crash on older devices. An increased load time of even seconds could drive away thousands of
potential visitors depending on your traffic.
Fundamentally responsive web design is neither a benefit nor drawback to your website. All it does is
make sure that the current pages are adapted to fit on different screen sizes but in most cases the rest
of your website will suffer if this is the only change you make.
2. What it comes down to is ensuring that the content you’re providing, regardless of the device, is scaled
correctly and does not interfere with mobile device usage. The goal is to provide the right content with
high performance, regardless of all the other circumstances.
Simply put, adding responsive web design to your website is not enough, but focusing on every aspect of
user experience is what will ensure your success in the long term.
