What is a Repository?

        11/19/2008 5
A repository is a type of digital
     library that contains:

• Learning content
• Metadata about the learning
  content

              11/19/2008 6
What is learning content?
Any digital content designed to teach a concept or skill

• Learning Object
  – Includes learning
    goals, concepts, practices, and
    assessments.
  – Full courses or units, complete textbooks

• Learning Asset
  – Lacks one or more pieces of a learning
    object.
  – Can be combined with other material or
edited to create a learning object.
  – Tutorials, simulations, audios, videos, anima
tions, games, slideshows, surveys, URLs, im
    ages, graphs, lesson plans

                                   11/19/2008 7
Examples of Learning Content
   • Ratios and Proportions: defines ratios and proportions and demonstrates
the simplification of rations and solving problems using proportions.

   • Geometry Gallery-Basic Geometry: collection of applets that demonstrate
       basic geometric concepts

   • Order of Operations - Problem 1: shows how to solve problems with
       different operations.

   • The Chemistry Collective: collection of virtual labs, scenario-based learning
       activities, and concepts tests

   • Confusing Words: Effect - Affect : provides definitions, examples, and
activities to practice using the two words correctly.

Examples May Be - Tutorials, simulations, audios, videos, animations, games, slideshows, surveys,
URLs, images, graphs, lesson plans, or complete textbooks or courses

                                             11/19/2008 8
What is Metadata?
• Metadata is data about data.
• Metadata is used to facilitate the search, retrieval, understanding, use and
  management of learning content.
• Examples of metadata fields: Author, title, subject, format
                                                                     Data /
                                                                    Content

     Metadata
                                  11/19/2008 9
A repository is a single point of entry
          where users can:

  • View, download and use learning content
  • Retrieve, customize and repurpose
    learning content
  • Share and contribute original learning
    content

                  11/19/2008 10
Why not Google?

• Too many results to choose from
• Too many irrelevant results
• Too time consuming
• Not peer-reviewed
• Don’t know rights for the use of content

                  11/19/2008 11
A repository is a learning community
where educators can:

• Integrate content into BlackBoard, ANGEL or
  Moodle
• Collaborate and exchange knowledge
• Efficiently develop unique content

                   11/19/2008 12
13
Why have a repository?

         11/19/2008 14
Reduce Cost

• More cost-effective development efforts
   – Create resources once, and re-use many times
   – Re-purpose existing resources
   – Avoid duplication of efforts
• Achieve cost savings via group-buy of quality
  content
Improve Quality

• Peer review process for contributed content
   – Depot content standards established
• Vetting process for content providers
   – Depot Content Team as Gatekeepers
• National Repository of Online Courses (NROC)
   – Depot Pilot base collection
Build Learning Community

Where educators can:
• Share their original content with colleagues
• Rate and comment on others’ contributed content
• Use Depot as a Gateway to other standards-
compliant repositories in other states and
throughout the world to build a larger learning
  community
Where are we now?

Editor's Notes

  1. The webpage where the video resides uses one of the most universal web base video formats – Adobe Shockwave/Flash. Virtually all browsers can play this type of video, but sometimes your browser may not have the most current version. If you are asked to install/update the “Flash” or “Shockwave” player when attempting to play this video, then please follow the instructions to do so. Once complete, close all copies of your browser and retry to play the video. This video is one of the best examples of the reuse of learning assets. It was originated from Wesleyan University’s LOLA Exchange repository. Florida Orange Grove adapted it at some expense. And we followed Florida in reuse at lesser expense. This is a 3rd generation video that presents compelling reasons to have a learning content repository.
  2. One place to go instead of hundreds of book marks in your browser
  3. There are some repositories that built content but had to close the door due to lack of funding. We are currently working on all components.
  4. These 5 work teams of more than 60 people represent the collective efforts in building the KY Learning Depot. The Stakeholders Group serves as a users group.
