7.1.1 What Would You Say Are the Key Trends and Developments in
Packaging and the Beverage Packaging Market?
Globalisation and consolidation have created a variety of challenges and opportunities for the
packaging industry and for our customers, and there are three that really stand out:
o Evolving consumer and demographic trends – by 2050, the global food industry needs
to feed an additional 2.4 billion people than today and this population will be even more
concentrated in big cities, away from food sources. Consumer health and lifestyle needs
are also changing, with demand for health-oriented and convenient products for “on-the-
go” consumption on the rise, alongside demand for products and packaging suited to the
specific needs of ageing populations.
o Rising costs and competitive pressures – our customers are under increasing pressure
to reduce operating costs, handle the increasing cost of raw materials and manage
pressure from competitors. As a result, the packaging industry has a responsibility to
provide solutions that are more efficient and productive than ever before, helping our
customers to do more with less.
o Increasing consumer consciousness about food safety and environmental issues –
in the wake of global food scares, consumer consciousness about food safety has
increased, meaning that customers need absolute traceability and reassurance in their
supply chains. Alongside this, consumers now recognise that they have a role to play in
reducing their environmental impact, by making informed purchasing choices. There is
increasing consumer demand for more information and for the availability of environmental
products, particularly in developing countries.
7.1.2 The Majority of Industries Were Severely Affected by the Economic
Recession but the Beverage Packaging Market Appeared to be More
Resilient. Why Do You Think This is So?
The ability of the packaging sector to adapt to these trends and challenges is a major factor in its
resilience compared to other industries.
