4.12.9 Major Australian Cyberwarfare Contracts & Programmes

Macquarie Telecom $14m 10/2013 In October 2013, Macquarie Telecom announced that it had been
awarded a five-year; $14m contract to supply cyberwarfare
services to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry
and 11 other federal agencies.
Verizon $15m 07/2013 In July 2013, Verizon announced a contract with the Australian
Federal Police to supply a managed gateway service to boost
security, reliability and overall efficiency of its IT systems. The
contract will last three years and is worth $15m.
Telstra $32m 07/2013 In July 2013, Telstra was awarded a contract by the Australian
Customs and Border Protection Service for secure Internet
gateway services. The contract covers 12 total agencies including
the Department of Finance and Deregulation, the Attorney-
General’s Department and the Department of Immigration and
Citizenship. The aim is to reduce the number of internet
gateways, thereby reducing vulnerability.
Telstra $1.01m 04/2013 In April 2013, Telstra and the Australian Department of Defence
signed a $1.01m deal to build a new terrestrial communications
network for the department. The contract will support a network
reaching out to 430 sites and supporting 100,000 users, both in
Australia and overseas (including with the US DOD).
Please note that not all of this funding is for information security.
Northrop Grumman N/A 10/2012 In October 2012, Northrop Grumman was awarded a contract to
build a cyber test range. ADFA, a partnership between the
Australian Defence Force and UNSW, conducts training to the
Australian DOD.

$2.2m 09/2011 The DSTO plans to spend up to $2.2 million on prototyping new
cyberwarfare technologies to help ‘future proof’ Australia’s
defence capabilities.
The allocation, part of the Australian Department of Defence’s
Corporate Enabling Research Program (CERP), will fund industry
partnerships to develop advanced technologies for countering
emerging cyberwarfare threats.
