Visiongain sought opinion of Dr. Fernando Schved - VP Strategic R&D & Chief Scientist of Galam
Group – a company that is focused on expertise in refining nature’s raw materials, manufacturing
fructose, glucose, natural high-fibre and protein ingredients, as well as native and modified
starches. We interviewed Dr. Schved in April 2014 and would like to thank him for his time.
7.1.1 Trends and Developments
Visiongain: What would you say are the key trends and developments in the Natural Sweeteners
Market and why?
Dr. Schved: One of the major trends that is dictated by the customer nowadays is for producers to
reduce the calorie content of the end product by at least 20%, ideally up to 50% or above. We will
see more and more development taking place in that direction, where the reduction of calorie
content by 20%, 30% or even 40% will be achieved on the increasing scale.
Another trend is the increasing improvement within natural sweeteners arena and especially the
quality of the existing natural sweeteners solutions in terms of "quality of sweetness". At the
moment we are facing a problem, where the consumer is reluctant to accept taste profiles which
are too far from that of sugar. In this case we are trying to work out this dilemma by mixing natural
sweeteners with sugar and flavour modifiers.
7.1.2 Challenges and Opportunities
Visiongain: What challenges and opportunities do you expect to see in the Natural Sweeteners
Market over the next 10 years?
Dr. Schved: I think one of the challenges within the sugar industry, which I believe, affects the
entire food and beverage industry as a whole is the delivery to the market of natural sweeteners
which meet the existing though regulatory framework . Some of the potential new natural
sweeteners require for example a "novel food process" authorization prior to their introduction into
the EU.

Expert Opinion ____ 7.1 Dr. Fernando Schved - VP Strategic R&D & Chief Scientist, Galam Group Visiongain sought opinion of Dr. Fernando Schved - VP Strategic R&D & Chief Scientist of Galam Group – a company that is focused on expertise in refining nature’s raw materials, manufacturing fructose, glucose, natural high-fibre and protein ingredients, as well as native and modified starches. We interviewed Dr. Schved in April 2014 and would like to thank him for his time. 7.1.1 Trends and Developments Visiongain: What would you say are the key trends and developments in the Natural Sweeteners Market and why? Dr. Schved: One of the major trends that is dictated by the customer nowadays is for producers to reduce the calorie content of the end product by at least 20%, ideally up to 50% or above. We will see more and more development taking place in that direction, where the reduction of calorie content by 20%, 30% or even 40% will be achieved on the increasing scale. Another trend is the increasing improvement within natural sweeteners arena and especially the quality of the existing natural sweeteners solutions in terms of "quality of sweetness". At the moment we are facing a problem, where the consumer is reluctant to accept taste profiles which are too far from that of sugar. In this case we are trying to work out this dilemma by mixing natural sweeteners with sugar and flavour modifiers. 7.1.2 Challenges and Opportunities Visiongain: What challenges and opportunities do you expect to see in the Natural Sweeteners Market over the next 10 years? Dr. Schved: I think one of the challenges within the sugar industry, which I believe, affects the entire food and beverage industry as a whole is the delivery to the market of natural sweeteners which meet the existing though regulatory framework . Some of the potential new natural sweeteners require for example a "novel food process" authorization prior to their introduction into the EU.
