Figure 2.6 gives the percentage distribution of number of ship owners based on number of ships.
Out of 9,540 ship owners, over 3,500 are single ship owners and over 1,250 own 2 ships. This
information is extremely valuable to those vendors who are up-coming with new technologies and
also for those who have a history of working with a typical type of ship owners. For instance if a
company like Maersk is targeted and the technology is extremely suitable, unique , productive,
economically beneficial, then the same could be adopted for all its vessels. Smaller companies
usually target the ship owners (or vice versa small ship owners contact vendors with cheaper
technologies) with 1 to 3 ships which forms 58% of the total number. Sometimes which technology
is adopted depends on the ship yards and ship owners which order ships purely to sell it when the
right opportunity is available.

The Marine Environment Protection Committee which met from 13 to 17 May 2013 had drawn
some reasonable and significant conclusions pertinent to the Ballast Water Treatment System. The
MEPC will consider the text of a draft IMO Assembly resolution on the application of regulation B-3
of the BWM Convention to ease and facilitate the smooth implementation of the Convention, for
submission to the28th session of the IMO Assembly (25 November to 5 December 2013). It
means the final verdict is also likely to conclude in this meet.
