1. Writing Likert Scale Questions for the Classroom Performance
System and Insight 360
A Likert scale is a type of question where respondents are asked to
rate the level at which they agree or disagree with a statement. For
instance on a scale from one to five a user can strongly disagree or
strongly agree with a statement. The scale is named for the professor
who invented the concept. ( A college professor recently corrected
my pronunciation..it is correctly pronounced (LIK ert)
The Classroom Performance System from eInstruction lends itself to
these kinds of questions.
Using the CPS response pads to deliver these kinds of questions is
easy to do. It also means that at the end of the session, one does not
need to gather and total the responses. The CPS software will
generate reports for you.
Using the CPS response pads is also a “green way” to deliver this
kind of assessment. There is no need to print out a sheet for each
respondent and if you do a lot of these kinds of sessions you will save
both paper and time.

2. If you do already have these questions printed, the “fastgrade”
function in the CPS software allows the creation of an answer key.
These printed sheets can be used with the response pads, and one
set could be used over and over.
And if you do have a printed set of questions, that will mean you don’t
have to “type in” any questions to CPS. Simply print out your question
handouts, create an answer key in fast grade, and you are ready to
go!
The CPS software also has an “anonymous” mode that doesn’t
capture who responded to what question. If assuring your audience
that their answer are anonymous, that is a feature available in the
CPS software.
It is also important to point out that the eInstruction InterwriteMobi ,
our wireless tablet that works with our eInstruction response pads
does have an embedded “KWIK” screen. “KWIK” stands for “Know
what I know” and it is possible, for each question you ask to see
exactly who put what answer . Again, that can be turned off in the
anonymous mode, but it is possible to see exactly who “disagrees”
instantly, in the case that is desirable, using the KWIK screen. As a
former 7th
grade teacher, I can think of many times that it would have
been good to “know what they knew…or felt” right away!

Let me also add for those with IR pads and the new SPARK, the
Mobi works with them too !
Also, that you don’t Need a Mobi to get on screen summaries.
The CPS software will show totals and the reports will show
exactly who put what. However, getting that instant feedback
immediately on the Mobi screen is a very good thing. And seeing
who put what answer is something that the Mobi, and Mobiview
allow.

4. Here are some verbs that will assist in writing good Likert Scale
Questions. The verbs in RED are the ones most commonly used
in each category .

Another aspect of CPS is the ability to add Graphics to illustrate
questions.
Thus it is possible to put “emoticons” beside each question, if that is
of interest

Another source for emoticons is the content library in the Workspace
Software. Workspace is an eInstruction software package and is bundled
with the eInstruction InterwriteMobi and Dualboard.
These three characters are “Jamal” , “Janice” and “Jason”. There are a
total of 11 “characters” in Workspace and each character has a full range
of expressions. Thus it is possible to use emoticons that represent different
genders and ethnic groups, where that is appropriate.
