USING INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS IN THE CLASSROOM: WORKING WITH
STUDENT PERSONAL RESPONSE DEVICES
March 30, 2010 4:15 PM - 6:15 PM

This interactive workshop will focus on creating lessons and units that use personal response
devices with interactive white boards. Personal response devices give students an opportunity to
give feedback to teachers in real time. We'll look at two distinct ways of using
personal response systems a) to engage students and allow for their input to guide discussion; and
b) using personal response devices for formative assessment and quizzes

The focus of the workshop will be on lesson design (to infuse discussion) and question design
(for assessments). Participants will also have an opportunity to learn about working with the
software and hardware. Our tools will be ACTIVInspire software and Activexpression devices,
though the ideas and concepts we will review and discuss will be applicable to other interactive
whiteboards and personal response devices.

This workshop provides participants with the underpinnings of the current pedagogy on the brain
and their application to teaching/learning strategies. A sequential, developmental approach is
taken to develop participants’ understanding of how the brain’s structure and organization
function and the effect of its interaction with the outside environment to make a determination of
what’s important and how it solves problems. Examination of learning styles and theories of
intelligences are reviewed as viable strategies to increase student performance and support the
needs of diverse student populations.

Acting out books, stories and poems helps students pay attention to the text, absorb meaning,
appreciate subtleties of description, and provides exciting (and authentic) ways to share their
work with both classmates and families.

This 5 hour, action-packed workshop will introduce classroom teachers to:
    • Theater techniques to build comprehension of poetry, fiction and non-fiction reading
         materials

Digital storytelling as a literacy activity in the elementary school is becoming an effective way
for teachers to integrate many concurrent agendas that are competing for their attention. Digital
storytelling allows teachers to incorporate the 21st Century skills of problem solving, creativity,
and collaboration. Encouraged by the ideas of Daniel Pink from his book, A Whole New Mind,
teachers will understand the potential role of storytelling in our students’ new work world.
Participants will work with student-friendly Web 2.0 tools and images. The writing exercises
created will be imaginative storytelling experiences. Teachers will harness technological abilities
and aptitudes that are already in place in their young students. The course readings about
different motivational approaches will help teachers to define their own style of digital
storytelling.

understand how students comprehend text and to strengthen and scaffold teachers’ explicit
instruction of comprehension strategies in their classrooms.

Participants will examine current research related to the topic and by explicit instructional
practices that apply the research findings. Participants will read about and discuss best practices

Online: March 2 - 28, 2010 No set times

This one-credit course will lead teachers and librarians through an exploration of a well-designed
research process. Get started with a face to face meeting where we'll pull apart the research
process and examine its various parts. How can you teach it? What can your students really learn
from doing research? Using readings and online discussion as well as lots of sharing, we'll spend
the rest of the month working on developing individual projects that will be ready to go in your
classrooms. This exploration is a perfect fit for both librarians and classroom teachers who want
to make their research projects smarter. We'll come back together to share our work and discuss
what we've learned that's useful at the end of the month.

USING MODELS TO UNDERSTAND FRACTIONS (An Online Course)
January 20 - March 23, 2010 Approximately 3 hours per week - no set times
No sessions over February break.

Mathematical models can be used to promote a deep understanding of fractions and fractional
relationships. All too often, students are taught mechanical ways to make sense out of fractions.
This course offers alternative ideas for fraction instruction and is based on the belief that students
can come to understand fractions in a number of different ways. Completion of a student
interview and a final project are integral parts of this course. A variety of readings, applets, and
videos form the content of this course, and participants are expected to share ideas with their

No session over February break. * Project due by April 14, 2010

This course is designed for preschool, kindergarten, first and second grade teachers as well as
special educators or mathematics specialists who work with students in these grades. In this
workshop, participants will:
    • deepen their knowledge of the big mathematical ideas, concepts, and skills involved in
the acquisition of early mathematics literacy.
    • extend their knowledge base through participating in class discussions, viewing
videotapes, looking at student work, reading required course material, and completing
assignments linked to their own classroom setting.
    • administer assessments, record the results, and use the results to inform individual and
         whole class instruction.
Teachers will become more skillful at observing students as they work and ask questions that will
move students’ thinking. As a result teachers will be able to provide more effective instruction
and ensure maximum learning for each student because they are aware of the essential steps
children move through when developing an understanding of foundational mathematical ideas.

This course offers alternative ideas for fraction instruction and is based on the belief that students
can come to understand fractions in a number of different ways. Completion of a student
interview and a final project are integral parts of this course. A variety of readings, applets, and
videos form the content of this course, and participants are expected to share ideas with their
online colleagues in the discussion forums.
