information about meetings, professional development opportunities, curriculum and program development,
grant awards, and school committee news. The bulletin is also the official vehicle for job postings. Please

Dear Colleagues,
There has been much in the media lately about the availability of flu vaccine, or lack thereof. Given the
heightened concern around this year’s flu season, I want to share an update of where we stand in the
Wellesley Public Schools. Earlier this month, working with the schools, the Wellesley Health Department
offered to arrange voluntary in-school H1N1 vaccination clinics for students in the middle school and high
school. We surveyed our middle and high school families last week to gauge interest and to help in our
planning, and the response from families in support of this proposal was extremely positive. The Health
Department then filed its request for H1N1 vaccine, and we began to plan possible dates.
This week the Health Department was notified that new delivery of H1N1 vaccine was indeterminate and
that no broadbased in-school clinics for students should be planned for the month of November. We are
continuing to work with the Health Department to determine whether in-school clinics in December will be
feasible. Like many other communities, our local Health Department has received a limited, modest supply of
H1N1 vaccine. On advice from the state Department of Public Health, we are working with local health
officials to determine how to best make this limited supply of H1N1 vaccine available to students who are at
the highest risk for complications from the flu.
I know that news of limited availability of flu vaccine has raised anxiety levels in our community. Please
remember there are other effective strategies to prevent the spread of illness. Stay home when you are ill;
exercise appropriate hygiene; and know when it is appropriate to return to work after you have been ill. As
we nativage these changing scenarios, I remain confident in the strength and competence of the
collaboration between our local Health Department and our school nursing staff under the leadership of
Anne Prinn.

Personnel Announcements Leave of Absence: Bevin Hale, Elementary Teacher, 1.0FTE leave January 27
- April 26, 2010
Discussion/Action School Committee received reports regarding enrollment and planning for use of stimulus
fund monies. The committee also received presentations of the proposed FY11 capital budget and five year
capital plan.
Are You Working Toward
a Higher Salary Lane?
All teachers who expect to receive a Master’s degree, M+30, or
M+60/Doctorate during the 12 month period July 1, 2010 - June
30, 2011, must send formal notification of intent to change
salary lanes to Mary Wolf c/o the Superintendent’s Office no
later than November 1, 2009. This early notification deadline
is required so that provisions for anticipated salary lane
changes may be made within the new fiscal year budget. nb
The list does not carry forward. Teachers must provide written
notice each year until they have received their new degree.
Primary Source Summer China Study Tour
Ancient and Modern China - July 9-23
Includes a visit to the traditional village of Huangcun, the hometown of the Peabody Essex Museum's Yin Yu
Tang House
Only those teachers who have taken one of Primary Source's one-week summer institutes, five-day seminar
series, or 2-credit online courses on China are eligible to apply. Recent pre-requisite programs include:
- China: Enduring Legacies and Radical Transformations (08/09 seminar series)
- Understanding Modern China (09 summer institute)
- China: Centuries of Tradition and Change (09-10 seminar series)
- The Enduring Legacy of Ancient China (09-10 online course)
Similar courses from prior years provide eligibility as well.
Cost to the participating Teacher is $1950. Participants should expect some additional expenses for visas,
travel insurance, and occasional meals.

“Ready for Retirement” will be presented across the Commonwealth in November and December. During this nuts-
and-bolts seminar, you will learn exactly what to do—and expect—as you go through the retirement process. This
free, optional program is designed for members retiring in 2010, and is held after school, from 4–6 p.m.
