Bike 4 AIDS is a campaign that raises funds to purchase bicycles and bicycle ambulances for communities in Malawi affected by HIV/AIDS. The bikes and ambulances help healthcare workers reach more patients in rural areas that lack transportation infrastructure. Since 2005, the campaign has purchased 171 bicycle ambulances and 220 bicycles, benefiting over 218,000 people across 109 community-based organizations. Students are encouraged to organize events like bike-a-thons or waxing fundraisers to support the initiative and make a difference in fighting HIV/AIDS in Malawi.

Why Bikes?
• About 8 million people, or
almost 70 per cent of
Malawians, live below the
national poverty line. More
than 90 per cent of them live
in rural areas and depend on
subsistence farming for their
livelihoods.
• In rural areas,
infrastructure is lacking
and vehicles are scarce
• Buying bikes locally
supports the local
economy
• The promotion of bicycle
use contributes towards
environmental
sustainability (MDG #7)

Bikes & Bicycle-Ambulances
• In rural Malawi, HIV and
AIDS caregivers travel to
neighbouring villages to care
for those affected.
• A lack of transportation limits
the number of people they
can help.
• With a bicycle, healthcare
workers can reach up to
5 times as many patients.

Bikes & Bicycle-Ambulances
• Bicycle ambulance: a bicycle
with a lightweight trailer and
removable stretcher attached
• Used to safely transport bed-
ridden patients to health clinics
and hospitals
• 25 = the average number of
times per month that B4A-
purchased bike ambulances
are put to use
