Cheikh SY is the Head Clerk of Missions at the Economic and Social Council of Senegal (ESC). He was promoted to this position in June 2011 after previously serving as a Protocol Officer and Liaison Officer for various organizations. Prior to joining the ESC in 2009, he served as a liaison officer for the Islamic Development Bank and African Development Bank. He enjoys working with youth and has participated in several youth programs in Senegal and the US focused on sustainable development. Cheikh SY holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Marketing.

Head Clerk of Missions, ESC Senegal
Cheikh SY assumed the position of the Head Clerk of Missions at the
Economic and Social Council of Senegal (ESC) after being promoted
from a Protocol Officer in June, 2011. Prior to joining the ESC in
2009, Mr. SY served as both a ‘Liaison Officer’ and ‘Supervisor’
within the organizational staff, during the Islamic Development Bank
(IDB) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) annual meetings and conferences; and as
the ‘Special Liaison Officer’ of the Islamic Development Bank Group (IDB) President Dr.
Ahmad Mohamed Ali Al-Madani at the 32nd Annual Meetings of the IDB (Dakar, May 2007).
As a passionate believer in the youth as the future, Mr SY thoroughly enjoys working
with young people to contribute to their growth and the exploration of their world in a
positive manner. Consequently, he has worked with, a variety of youth and/or community
programs over the last eight (08) years, both in Senegal and the USA, especially in issues
related to sustainable development. These programs include: Cultural and Social
Association of Air France Agent (ASSCAF) - Facilitator; Camp Howe Inc – Camp Counselor
(Diversity, Leadership and basketball-themed activities); Give1 Project – Proposal and
project development and implementation; Sport and Education for the Economic
Development of Senegal (SEEDS) Academy - Team leader of the 1st Promotion; Youth and
Education with Sport (YES) with Africa Senegal – Camp Counselor; LEAD Africa Fellowship
Program – Facilitator/Trainer; and English Lovers Award (ELA) – Judge; among others. He
is regularly called on to provide advice and strategic thinking to a number of civil society and
community-based initiatives, such as the Reubeuss Environmental Committee and the MPS
(Patriotic Movement of Senegal).
Given his diverse experiences within multicultural environments, through his work and
community service, Mr SY has developed a strong inter-disciplinary approach with focuses in
leadership, sustainable development, marketing, management and sports, all geared
towards the empowerment of youth.
Mr. SY is currently working on his thesis for a Masters in Marketing on the “Promotion of Safe
and Sustainable Agricultural Products” in collaboration with Enda Pronat. He holds a
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science (Oriented to Management) from the African Institute
of Management (IAM). Mr SY is a LEAD Fellow from Cohort 16, and thus, a part of a global
network of leaders for environment and development.
