The intersection of user experience and process is the site of intense debate and scrutiny as various schools of thought enter and transform UX discourse. Relativist arguments and trump cards abound (“if you had to modify the method, you weren’t doing it right;“ “the rules require that you abandon all rules”; “it’s not true x or y”). But is a dogmatic approach truly effective for building user experiences in a professional services context? What does Agile look like outside of software product development and where do the rules need to bend to serve clients effectively? In an attempt to share findings, lessons, and insight with other young user experience companies, this talk explores some of the trials, tribulations, steps and missteps we’ve experienced over the past year while evolving into an Agile UX professional services company.

Niemniej jednak nadal popełniamy wiele błedów i nasze projekt raczej stosunkowo niezbyt często kończą sie spektakularnym sukcesem. Być może jednym z powodów tej niedoskonałości w procesach wytwarzania oprogramowania jest niekoniecznie dobre zrozumienie wspomnianych wyżej metod i narzędzi. A jeśli o zrozumienie chodzi to myślę, że najelpiej zacząć od początku naszego procesu czyli od wymagań. I właśnie o tym jest ta prezentacja… Jeśli wydaje Ci się, że wiesz już wszystko na temat BDD i wymagań w Agile to… Pewnie jesteś w błędzie… Nie, nie twierdzę, że na tym wykładzie dowiesz się wszystkiego w tym temacie… Być może jednak dowiesz się o rzeczach, które nie są oczywiste i które realnie pomoga Ci w pracy. Jeśli uważasz, że User Stories, BDD, ATDD i SBE nie mają sensu to… Zgadzam sie z Tobą i z chęcią powiem Ci dlaczego w Twoim kontekście im tego sensu brakuje (wspomożemy się w tym celu Cynefin Framework). Mowa będzie o mitach związanych z User Stories, Specification By Example, Behavior Driven Development, różnicy pomiędzy wymaganiami a specyfikacją, Cynefin Framework oraz Continuous Delivery.

Most of the corporations already adopted some kind of formal project management that is aligned to the strict corporate policies and procedures of managing things. If you want to be treated seriously, you need to talk abot project plans, milestones, deadlines, deliverables, commitments etc. Right? Well, it depends. We spent several years explaining to the corp guys that even if you have printed project plan hanging on the wall of the project room it does not mean that things are happening as plan suggests. More often, reality is that most of the stuff is going somewhere else, and that we have totaly different way of looking at the projects. Meet Agile, still someting new and exotic in executive mindset, but approach that is giving better and more understandable results.

Half Day Workshop given 5/22/2013 at WebVisions Portland. In this workshop Bill will explore the mindset of LeanUX and how it relates to bring products to life in the midst of big organizations that don't normally think "Lean". He will look at how teams can create a strong partnership between product, design & engineering in a way that tears down the walls and instead focuses on three key principles: Shared understanding Deep collaboration Continuous customer feedback The workshop will take a look at how Bill has been able to apply Lean UX at PayPal — a place that in recent years has been the total antithesis of the lean startup idea. With very specific examples, he will share lessons learned applying lean to the full product life cycle as well as how it relates to agile development. Finally, the workshop looks at the technology stack. In the last few years there has been an explosion of open source technology stacks that can support rapidly creating products, launching them to scale and rapidly iterating on them when live. While startups embrace these stacks from the get-go, large organizations struggle with how to embrace this change. This workshop will also look at the shift that has happened, what is driving this change, and how organizations can embrace this stack and how to marry Lean Tech with Lean UX.

My Agile 2013 session 'Rapid Product Design in the Wild'. In August 2012 Red Gate attended Kscope, a conference for Oracle developers. Instead of doing the usual product demonstrations, we turned our stand into a live lab and took Agile development processes out of the office and in front of our customers. Our stand included an area for customer research, a Kanban board and information radiators in the form of a whiteboard, blank wall and a large digital screen. Over 3 days we ran 9 sprints and conducted 25 customer interviews, using a paper prototype to get feedback. We collected invaluable information about our customers' development environments, how they work with their teams, their processes, tasks and pain points. By the end of the conference my colleague had developed an interactive HTML/CSS prototype which potential customers could evaluate. The team went through several rapid build-measure-learn cycles to improve our product concept and validate the market need. This presentation explains the process we used and introduces the Live Design Lab Planner, a tool which helps teams to plan this type of rapid product design activity.
