The BMWP scoring table – scores at family level So if in our sample we get a flat bodied mayfly (Heptageniidae), which is very sensitive to pollution, we score 10. A Yellow Sally stonefly (Perlodidae) is also very sensitive and therefore scores a further 10. As does a Grannom cased caddis (Brachycentridae). Whereas a Sandfly caseless caddis (Rhyacaphilidae) is slightly less sensitive to pollution and scores 7. We therefore have a score of 37. All of the other families found in the sample are then added up to give an overall BMWP score. On an unpolluted southern chalkstream this can be as high as 300 but upland rivers tend to be (quite normally) lower.
