3. Early life
Rube Goldberg started his career by designing Sewers in San Francisco. Earning $100 a
month.
He did this for a couple of years, then got onto his career of drawing.
He drew cartoons for the San Francisco Chronicle, earning $8 a week. Some of those
drawings had been found in the bin.
A bigger step in his career was when he was asked to sketch athletes at sporting events.

His machines came about when he started drawing humorous but logical inventions to
perform a simple task.
E.g. One of his drawings was to open a garage door using a bumblebee, athlete and a
hat.
A bit like a marble roller when all little things perform a big thing.
