Citi Skills Marathons
Florencia Spangaro
Director of Stakeholder Engagement and Strategy
Citi Foundation
Summary
Citi Skills Marathon: done-in-a-day, pro-bono model, which leverages the business
expertise of Citi employees while addressing the critical needs of the NGO
community. Small teams of seasoned Citi professionals are matched to pre-selected
nonprofit organizations to complete a specific time-bound task.
• Launched in 2012 in partnership with the Taproot Foundation
• To date, 5 marathon events have taken place across the U.S.
• Marathon events are linked to a specific theme (e.g. women, veterans,
sustainability)
• “Tasks” align with our community partners’ needs & our core competencies:
financial modeling, cost analysis, succession planning, etc.
• Program results in concrete deliverables at the end of a single day (e.g. excel
file/financial model, PowerPoint presentation/strategy, tagline options)
Nonprofit Impact**:
• Increased nonprofit capacity: 96% said that the deliverables
from the event can be implemented; 90% plan to
implement the deliverable and believe it will strengthen
their organization
• Value add: 100% would participate in another event and
100% would recommend the program to an industry peer
Employee Impact**:
• Skill development: 96% found it fulfilling to apply their
existing expertise in a new and different context; 80% of
employees felt that the program enabled them to learn and
develop professional skills (career skills, networking,
leadership experience);
• Pride/team building: 96% said the event made them feel
proud of Citi; 96% felt that their team provided high-quality
support to the nonprofit; 97% would recommend event to
colleagues
The Numbers:
• 35 organizations, 790 hours of service, 158 Citi executives
• Total value of the time donated: $94,800*
Impact
“It was very helpful for our
team to receive unfiltered &
honest feedback from neutral
parties who were solely
interested in helping us to
knot out some thorny issues.”
- NGO Executive Director
“I was able to pull from on-
the-job [banking] experiences
to provide them with the
tools needed to create scale
to a pilot program.”
- Citi Employee
* Based on CECP estimates of $120/hour for mid-level employees
** All participants are asked to complete an online feedback survey after the event.
Key Takeaways
• One-day pro-bono model is a great fit for our
organizational structure and aligns to our
‘more than philanthropy’ approach
• Third-party (Taproot) brought invaluable
expertise, particularly in the process of
screening nonprofits for participation
readiness and designing “right-sized” tasks
• Matching skills required by non-profit to
capacity of employees is critical ; don’t be
afraid to say “thanks, but no thanks”
• Model requires precise planning and
logistics – there is no ‘room’ for errors
• Getting the balance right between too much
or too little pre-event preparation is
challenging
• Importance of starting small but planning big
– piloted in the US yet designed for global
marketplace; currently working on
international expansion for Q4 2013
What we have learned
• Partnerships – sourcing partners and
understanding their needs
• Employee Appetite – degree of interest in pro-
bono activity & determining frequency
• Preparation – advance materials and briefing;
scoping the right tasks
• Senior Champion– bringing credibility and
supporting recruitment process
• Impact Measurement – survey tools
• Communication – pre, during and post

It was good to sit down and focus and nice to be able to get an outside perspective.” - Zan Brookshire, Treehouse Board President "Last year on IMPACT Day I was pulling weeds and it turns out I'm not very good at that. So when this opportunity came up to actually use my skills, I jumped on it!“ - Deloitte practitioner “I really appreciated the opportunity to apply my consulting skills to a small startup-like nonprofit, it was a refreshing change from my day-to-day” - Deloitte practitioner “This is THE most impactful thing Deloitte practitioners can do on IMPACT Day!” - Deloitte PPD “I haven’t felt that energized in my job as I did that day in quite a long time!” - Nonprofit participant “It was helpful to have the time to talk through challenges with experienced professionals outside of our organization. • 23. Citi Skills Marathons Florencia Spangaro Director of Stakeholder Engagement and Strategy Citi Foundation
  • 24. Summary Citi Skills Marathon: done-in-a-day, pro-bono model, which leverages the business expertise of Citi employees while addressing the critical needs of the NGO community. Small teams of seasoned Citi professionals are matched to pre-selected nonprofit organizations to complete a specific time-bound task. • Launched in 2012 in partnership with the Taproot Foundation • To date, 5 marathon events have taken place across the U.S. • Marathon events are linked to a specific theme (e.g. women, veterans, sustainability) • “Tasks” align with our community partners’ needs & our core competencies: financial modeling, cost analysis, succession planning, etc. • Program results in concrete deliverables at the end of a single day (e.g. excel file/financial model, PowerPoint presentation/strategy, tagline options)
  • 25. Nonprofit Impact**: • Increased nonprofit capacity: 96% said that the deliverables from the event can be implemented; 90% plan to implement the deliverable and believe it will strengthen their organization • Value add: 100% would participate in another event and 100% would recommend the program to an industry peer Employee Impact**: • Skill development: 96% found it fulfilling to apply their existing expertise in a new and different context; 80% of employees felt that the program enabled them to learn and develop professional skills (career skills, networking, leadership experience); • Pride/team building: 96% said the event made them feel proud of Citi; 96% felt that their team provided high-quality support to the nonprofit; 97% would recommend event to colleagues The Numbers: • 35 organizations, 790 hours of service, 158 Citi executives • Total value of the time donated: $94,800* Impact “It was very helpful for our team to receive unfiltered & honest feedback from neutral parties who were solely interested in helping us to knot out some thorny issues.” - NGO Executive Director “I was able to pull from on- the-job [banking] experiences to provide them with the tools needed to create scale to a pilot program.” - Citi Employee * Based on CECP estimates of $120/hour for mid-level employees ** All participants are asked to complete an online feedback survey after the event.
  • 26. Key Takeaways • One-day pro-bono model is a great fit for our organizational structure and aligns to our ‘more than philanthropy’ approach • Third-party (Taproot) brought invaluable expertise, particularly in the process of screening nonprofits for participation readiness and designing “right-sized” tasks • Matching skills required by non-profit to capacity of employees is critical ; don’t be afraid to say “thanks, but no thanks” • Model requires precise planning and logistics – there is no ‘room’ for errors • Getting the balance right between too much or too little pre-event preparation is challenging • Importance of starting small but planning big – piloted in the US yet designed for global marketplace; currently working on international expansion for Q4 2013 What we have learned • Partnerships – sourcing partners and understanding their needs • Employee Appetite – degree of interest in pro- bono activity & determining frequency • Preparation – advance materials and briefing; scoping the right tasks • Senior Champion– bringing credibility and supporting recruitment process • Impact Measurement – survey tools • Communication – pre, during and post Things to consider
