The Health of the Bay

has only modestly improved over the past five years, increasing
from 36 percent in 2003 to 43 percent in 2008.2
   Nitrogen and phosphorus pollution remain the leading
threat to the health of the Bay. Two of the top sources of these
pollutants include runoff from urban and suburban areas and
air pollution from automobiles, factories, and power plants.
Air pollution particles attach to water molecules, entering
the water cycle where they are deposited in local streams and
waterways. These pollutants result in algal blooms that cloud
the water. When the algae dies and decomposes, it uses much
of the oxygen in the water, making it next to impossible for
other organisms to survive in areas thick with algae. Toxic
contamination is another threat to the Bay. There has been
no improvement in the level of toxic contamination in the          1

Two of the top sources of these pollutants include runoff from urban and suburban areas and air pollution from automobiles, factories, and power plants. Air pollution particles attach to water molecules, entering the water cycle where they are deposited in local streams and waterways. These pollutants result in algal blooms that cloud the water. When the algae dies and decomposes, it uses much of the oxygen in the water, making it next to impossible for other organisms to survive in areas thick with algae. Toxic contamination is another threat to the Bay.
